Well when I say today.. I mean I "finished" putting central locking in the Defender today.

This'll be the third day.

Day 1 on weekend 1, fit actuators. With great help from this thread here: Installed central locking into my 1993 Defender (http://www.aulro.com/afvb/90-110-130-defender-county/91383-installed-central-locking-into-my-1993-defender.html) from 2234jones

... a couple of months later ...

Day 1 on weekend 2, wire in central locking.
Day 2 on weekend 2, clean up.

Was a bit of a saga to be honest. I thought I'd be clever and go and grab an el' cheapy central locking kit from e-bay - it wasn't worth it.

When we first went to fit the central locking actuators, the brackets and steel pins were both too small - even though the kit was advertised as being usable in a 4wd! So after some fuffing around we worked around that issue.

Then on weekend 2 we found some more issues to the point were I could say it just didn't work. The remote units wouldn't be recognised at all and we couldn't get the drivers door to work properly no matter how much we adjusted the pins. The best we could achieve was that locking the drivers door with the key would lock all the other doors but unlocking the drivers door with the key would only unlock the drivers door.. until I put my hand in and moved the door knob up another fraction of an inch and then hey presto all doors are open.

So eventually I headed off to Jaycar and picked up a new brain - a Steel mate 386M with remote key fobs. Great unit, only cost $50 and was just what we needed -a central brain and some remote key fobs (we already had all the actuators in). Got back to find that it didn't like talking to the master actuator unit very much.. so after some more umming and ahhing we headed back to Jaycar and picked up one of the individual master units from their Response line-up and it worked like a treat.

Moral of the story: If I hadn't been a cheapskate and just gone to Jaycar in the first place it would have saved us a lot of heartache and hassle.

P.S. The Jaycar actuators definitely have long enough brackets and pins

EDIT: I cannot thank my mate Ken from the Land Rover Owners Club of Brisbane for all the help he's given me in getting this kit installed - thanks Ken, I couldn't have done it without you!
