Hi,
Just want to put it out there. How easy would it be to put in a Puma 2.4 into a S1 TDI disco or for that matter a defender TDI? Complete with gearbox and transfer????

Would it be cheaper to source the engine and gearbox from a Transit van and adapt it to the LT230 Transfer?

Will the D1 axles handle the extra HP/Torque?

Will the Ford Transit Van axle fit the D1?

Cheers
Luke.

my advice is just go and buy a puma defender....:)
in about a couple of years or so the 2007 models will be available for good money, not worth the conversion $$$ to fit in a 20 year old D1 in my book.

Although being the same engine, it has received some adaptions/modifications for use in a Land Rover, so if you are going down that road, I'd be looking for an engine that was fitted to a LR.
The Disco axles should be able to cope IMHO.

Why would you bother?

At least the early 2.4 tdci transit motor has a rotor centrifuge, (exactly same as Td5 )
but the LR 2.4 does not .

I agree, but for a different reason

There is better engines to use for an engine conversion:wasntme:

That was my point too.

D1's are nice enough and agricultural enough that they deserve to be allowed to live.

Once fozzies sorted I'll be chasing down a new donk and diff set for SWMBO's disco I'll probably wind up with a 2.8inter but given SWMBOS lack of GAF for checking fluids and things will probably stick in a deutz aircooled turbo diesel.

If you wanted to go the Puma swap why not just go all way and go the 5cyl 3.2 instead? I couldnt imagine the cost would be that different or more difficult the going with a 2.4 swap but you will get one hell of an engine for your troubles.

Reason for asking is that I have been driving a Transit van at work the last week and started to like it, but found the ratio spread between 4-5-6 to be very narrow. 5th gear is pretty much pointless.I like my 14yr old D1, but they are getting old and I am looking at more power/torque.

I'd be looking at a different donk...

...but if you did go that route, you'd need a complete engine, MT82 & transfer from a TDCi Defender. There are some LR specific mods but you also need to take into account the electronics and other sensors. e.g. there's a sensor on the transfer case & gearbox to tell the ECU to use the "Idle jack" program when in 1st Low.

Another thing you need to take into account is the space needed under the hood. The bulge in the Defender bonnet is there to cope with the steep angle required to fit the engine.

Alternatively, one of the pommy tuners has a TDV6 conversion kit for D1, just computers and bits, or the whole engine. That (LR/Ford??) V6 diesel is quite common across quite a few marques in Europe.

Have also seen the original engine new from Brazil I think; all tooling and IP sold to Sth America. They have apparently fixed lots of the niggles and have it out to 3.0 ltrs. Recall seeing a NZ distributor somewhere.
