Hi,
Is it possible to purchase reasonable quality gutter mounts?
I will be building my own custom roof rack during 2013 but I do want it to look nice and use pretty, engineered gutter mounts to save the hassle.
I have had a quick look and not been able definitively identify any of the correct and suitable dimensions for a D2 with factory bars.
Are they out there?

You need legs 29 to 30cm long to clear the factory roof rails. Rhino racks do a set. There was a set of 4 legs on ebay the other day, might still be there.
Any of these should work.

I have a Jarram Roof Rack from WA .The mounts are gutter ones and IMHO are very sturdy. The rack is off at the moment so ,if you wish,PM me and I can show you the set up.
Mine are for '96 Disco but you will see that the gutter mounts can be engineered or made to fit the flatter roof of the defenders.

I think my RR was bought from Powerful4x4, (Sunshine, Vic) and were too short for the car, so I extended the legs by about 30mm, then I found out I could have swapped them over for longer legs, so you should also be able to buy some from them.
Their legs also go over to a flat section, which would make it easy to bolt your rack straight on, as opposed to welding them on.

I have a set of 6 Rola gutter mounts to fit if you are interested
