The BSL has struck again,,
This time it may be terminal(with any luck)
Happily motoring along (without van) hit a both wheel pot hole(non aligned road onto a bridge) and instant piston slap,,,, any moderate throttle aplication and (sounds like only) one cylinder can be made to rattle,, very sluggish at take off and obviously running on fewer than 8, can be teased up to highway speeds with no apparent bad noises,, but its not happy Jan,,
so, what could cause sudden loss of a cylinder and piston slap??
eating another valve?

I would be looking for a loose connection somewhere. Coil pack, injector....that sort of stuff that can be affected by a jolt.
Piston slap doesn't affect general engine running so I think you can rule out that being the result of a pothole.

actually-------
it turns out to be two slipped liners,
AND a head gasket,,
it seems all things are possible-
in a land rover,,,

I think, from reading another thread, you've got a replacement engine lined up?

scarey huh,,,
yea,, new short 4.6 from Turners UK.
Thing is,, I cant ever remember overheating it,, sure it once got hot enough to melt the plastic convoluted tubing under the bonnet,, but that was last November. no lights, no other indication of excessive heat.

Here's a thought, do you have comprehensive insurance?
Comprehensive insurance will usually cover you for "accidental damage". That is the legal term.
For example a rock is thrown up by another vehicle and smashes your wing mirror. Or you drive over an unusually large pothole and it causes your cylinder liners to slip?
It is worth an ask at least, if you don't ask, you don't get.

Hope you enjoy it Pedro!
Out of curiosity, what's the fuel economy of the 4.6 compared to the 3.9?
Cheers

.......Out of curiosity, what's the fuel economy of the 4.6 compared to the 3.9?.......
For a V8, you just measure it in one word -"LOTS"

Hopefully better!:D
There is a 5.2 on here that gets much better economy than a standard 4L.
sort of makes sense,,
as mine was such a slug I AM expecting a good result fuel wise.
10-1 comp, new H180 Kent cam and new 4.6 bores/pistons.
Am hopeful of over 400Nm

Karl posted the latest mineral news from Sth Oz last week where they've found a squillion barrels or so of shale oil + new Yank technology to extract it.
Should keep Pedro going for a few weeks :D
