So tonight I have now picked up my 2001 Defender 110, it's got some klms however it has been regularly serviced by Land Rover up until December last year when it had it's last service.
Looks to be in great condition for the year and the klms [bigsmile1]. The bits I've noticed on the way home, only thing so far is a whiff of diesel, I can't see any leaks so I'll have to investigate further in the daylight. And the hand brake light is on, something to do with the switch apparently, Land Rover have been trying to fix it for the last ten years without success, how hard can this be?
Got a few goodies, engle socket, bull bar & winch and the back has been floored out, no drawers installed as yet, a small project ahead. Needs rubber so theres a lazy $1k to put that right.

Anyway, very happy, handles like a dream, quiet, no rattles or squeaks, I'm sure this will be a beter proposition for my wife and I's trip up to Kununurra later on this year than my RR Sport, much as I love the vehicle the practicalities of subjecting it to days of corrugations and red dust just doesn't do it for me I'm afraid.
Look forward to picking up more hints and tips as I get into it...........

Hi , and welcome . The hand brake light it's common , just push the brake lever down when it comes on . It's only the rubber boot pulling the lever off the switch . It shouldn't be bineding ,you can allways check by touching the hand brake drum to see how hot it is see how you go good luck jimr1 ..:)..

Congratulations on your purchase.
My year 2000 Defender's been brilliant. Just clocked 300,000km.
Looks like you know your stuff about LRs but I'll remind you anyway to check ASAP that the oil sump bolt has been loc tited.
Before buying mine with 160,000km on the clock it had been serviced regularly by LR but the bolt had never been touched and when the sump was opened up, sure enough the bolt was working loose.
Like you, I'm just about to build some cargo storage. There's another thread running about gull wing rear windows and I'm hoping I can stretch the budget for one.

Sound's like a good one.Mine is a 1999 TD5 and I fell for the extras on it rather than the basics!Have only driven 100km in it since I bought it 6 months ago,at present am doing it up, starting with the wheel bearings/brakes/suspension etc.A good idea before you fit a drawer system would be to cut an access hole to the fuel pump.....I have not cut mine out yet,but have the measurements[I think].The Outback drawer system in my vehicle is out at the moment.....if you want to see how it is constructed etc, PM me.

I would like to think so, so far so good. I've bought some goodies from TRS just a case of fitting them when they arrive. Can't believe that they still have the metal flaps under the windscreen on a 2001 build, just awesome, the last LR of this style I was in apart from the occasional test drive was an old series one I used to be a passenger in back in the early seventies, it was a red one commonly known as "Noddy", used as a tow truck at the garage I used to work part time at.
I wanted to try out the TD5 engine, I'm now fitting the later intercooler rad, silicon hoses a chip and the EGR removal kit, spark a bit more life into the old girl. Interesting to see how things go from there.
Change all the oils out to full synthetic tomorrow, fit some rock sliders so my wife can actually get in and a parachute for my daughter so she can get out........ Onward and forward.

If you can smell diesel check the fuel pressure regulator, its behind the engine and will drip down onto the gearbox just to confuse you. If it needs replacing check the shape as there where a few different designs. Welcome to defender life.:D

You could well be onto something here. I was into the bowels of te engine this afternoon changing oils and things, there is a definite drip, there is a small block / manifold attached to the back of the head on the right hand side, has two pipes and a sensor going into it, the drip appears to be between the manifold and the head, not so much the sensor, however, I couldn't see into where I was looking to well so this could be the problem, I was going to take the small manifold / bloc off and see if there were some o-rings or something that could have gone hard or cracked, definitely in that area though.

That sounds like it. There are a few different ones for the td5 so I rang 4x4 spares in kotara who asked for the description and they sent me the right one.
