View Full Version : Rego labels no longer required anywhere?

I understand that you no longer need to display a rego label on your vehicle in NSW. However are there any States/Territories that still require labels? I heard that when they stopped them in SA that some people were booked when travelling in Victoria.
Just wondered if its safe to remove them.
Cheers

I changed my plates 2 weeks ago (VIC), and was given a label over the counter.

Unless it's been changed since then, you still need to display a label in VIC, if it's a VIC registered car that is.

Would find it hard to believe if interstate registered vehicles travelling through VIC were booked for not displaying a sticker, when the 'registering' state doesn't require it.

Hi Discomark, since no rego label is issued, you can't be expected to display one when travelling out of state. It would be wise to carry your rego documents with you, I imagine, to show that you are regoed correctly. This will apply to me shortly as I my vehicle is registered in January and I am travelling interstate in February. Cheers, 130man.

Thanks for that.
BTW, I found the article where SA people were getting booked by Vic police. Victorian police harass SA motorists for not displaying vehicle registration stickers | adelaidenow (http://www.adelaidenow.com.au/news/south-australia/victorian-police-harass-sa-motorists-for-not-displaying-vehicle-registration-stickers/story-e6frea83-1226479474074)

Tas has phased the stickers out.. which is surprising, we're usually the last ones to "update" :o

I think it is because all the traffic cops have auto plate recognition on them now.

I'm driving to Vic in a couple of weeks, hope i don't get booked for not having one!

What he said!

WA has phased them out. QLD still has them.

I think you'll find that they are required to carry the rego papers in the car (at least when interstate)

- Which makes it easier for thieves to pass themselves off as the lawful owner...

A quick licence check would sort them out I reckon.

I don't believe you are correct. Vehicle licence databases can be accessed nationally can't they? There is nothing on my rego paperwork that says I have to carry rego papers when travelling interstate.

gone in july in the NT

Car and motorcycle registration stickers will be abolished from 1 July 2013 for all light vehicles, including cars, motorcycles, trailers, boat trailers, caravans and horse float

Got to say "Tough titties".
The NSW and SA police will show no hesitation in booking me for towing an unregistered trailer whilst displaying a Victorian "exempt trailer" plate. (It is legal in Victoria.)
"Local road rules apply." they would say followed by "Ignorance is no excuse."
In Victoria, displaying the registration label is part of the "Road Safety Regulations". If the registration label is not affixed in the correct location, your vehicle is clearly unsafe.

When I can tow my registration exempt trailer displaying the "exempt trailer" plate in all Australian states and territories legally, I would agree interstate visitors should not be fined under this regulation

Just wondered if its safe to remove them.
It would make your vehicle unsafe in Victoria.
