Small flashing red light what does it mean

I have a small red light that flashes well after i turn my ignition off and all the lights and computor shuts down on my D4.................This little red slowly flashing light is in the middle of the Tacometer ( I think thats whats its called ) dial ....anyway the one that measure engine revs

I have had my D4 for about 2 years and i dont believe this light was ever there .....or if it was i never noticed it ..............i first saw it on my last trip a week ago .......I have searched my operating manual .....but find no reference or explanation .........any ideas ...explanations ????

The indicator that shows the immobilizer is active.

When you're outside the car looking in the window and it's not flashing, that means it's sucked the last dregs life out of your battery. Don't expect to "re-mobilise" easily or soon.:o

thanks gary .............so was it always there and i never noticed ...............or could i have had the imobiliser turned off at some stage ...is it possible to do this
I have no mechanical electrical or technical nouse ..............what exactly does the imobiliser do .....stop the car being started if no key present

or should it be turned off ....or is it permanently on ...not sure why in the last two years i never noticed it untill now

I would not get too concerned. It think it is an indicator the computer is still active. When resetting ( rebooting ) the ignition, turn the vehicle off, and activate the door locks. ( you can still be inside ) Wait until all the lights are off, including the red indicator. Activate the door unlock, and restart the vehicle. The reboot will clear some simple warning lights and faults.

thomasb I'm with you. I have never noticed this in 3 years of driving my D4, until yesterday (before I read your post).

I had to shut down and lock my D4 while sitting in the driver's seat to clear a fault as described by Admiral, and there was that blinking red light in the tacho so I wondered whether it was part of the fault. Then, when I got home hours later, I saw your question about the same blinking light. It's made me wonder whether I've been incredibly unobservant for 3 years and never noticed a blinking red light on the dash, or whether mine's been on the blink (sorry) for 3 years and just fixed itself yesterday.

By the way, highly recommend buying the extended warranty. Got the red triangle and "Restricted Performance" warning yesterday, 11 days after the original warranty expired. Shutting down and waiting a few minutes cleared the fault but it came back about a minute further down the road and LR Assist advised that the car was not safe to drive so it got carted away on a truck and a rental car was provided to continue our journey home (300km) for the 5 of us. Waiting to hear today what the problem is and how long to fix, but the service from the warranty people was excellent.

Nothing unusual about the car, conditions or driving before this happened, just cruising at freeway speed and not towing anything. Bit of a jolt as the performance was cut (both times) and I could still manage to cruise gently at about 110km/h but it refused to go any faster and not much acceleration or power available for hills, etc

Beamin ....thanks for your comments looks like we must both be very unobservant ........I did the reboot .........but the red light still there ....

funny thing I also got "restricted performance"message ...first time ever last week ......but it was on one of those extreme hot days in sydney ....my temp gauge said 47 c ........i rebooted and it cleared ......but maybe there is some thing different in the electricals .....will have land rover check it next service ......im assuming that this little led ....will not draw down my battery given it seems to be on permanently now ......and again im sure it was not before

Pretty sure it is the immobiliser/alarm light.

Basically as far as I am aware it simply shows it is active once car is locked. Assuming you are generally outside the vehicle and walking away when you lock it there is no reason to have noticed it.

The immobiliser is just that, shuts everything down so it is hard to steal unless it reads the special code from an authorised (your) key.

That is why when these vehicles are stolen it is usually after the thief has followed you home, broken in an taken your keys so they can drive off with the car.

My guess is that an LED that size could run for a year on a AAA battery so I don't think it's likely to cause any problem although there's bound to be other circuitry that drains more power than this blinking LED.

Just got the diagnosis for the cause of my "Restricted Performance" warning - a split inlet manifold. A bit of duct tape might have got us home, but now waiting for parts and LR have extended the car rental for as long as it takes to get my car back to me. Nice one.

Beamin, Hi, my D4 3.0 is in the workshop at the moment, having checks done to trace reason for my Restricted Performance event, a couple of weeks ago.
The job is taking a long time, and I assume something like your failed item makes diagnosis, and repair a little easier.
Can I ask if you remember, when you were driving in limp mode, ie,during loss of power, if you heard a high pitched 'Whine', somewhat similar to a Police, or Ambulance siren, whenever you eased off on the throttle. This whine would stop when the throttle was used again, and returned each time you released the throttle, even slightly.
I ask, because the Fitters are going to pressurise my inlet manifold, and check for leaks using smoke.

I didn't notice any whine like you describe, but I only drove for a few minutes in restricted mode and that was on a busy freeway so very noisy. The only time I was fully off the throttle I was hard on the brakes to stop in a tiny emergency phone bay. I didn't notice unusual sounds but could easily have missed something like that. The workshop used the smoke trick to find the crack. Still waiting for parts but should be fixed by Friday and able to test then whether there might have been any other cause for the restricted performance warning. Hopefully that's the end of it and I can have my car back soon
