I had to move and install (by hand) 2000kg of cast metal drain grates. Each grate weighed 20kg. being that the ACO drain was set into the ground onto a concrete footing, I was having to put one foot down into the drain and have the other at ground level. All the grates were on a single pallet placed in the middle of the area I was working, being 2 x 25m runs of drain...
remove from pallet, into wheelbarrow, out of barrow, down into place. Most had to be flipped around and "persuaded" with a large rubber mallet. Chinese casting at its best
by the end of it I had that "Roger Murtaugh" feeling

Hello and thanks for the video - really made me smile.
Pushing 62 and two kids through school and into uni - that's almost become my anthem.
Was doing the Indian rubber man routine under my 88" last week and seem to recall muttering more than once or twice "I'm getting just too old for this..........".
Cheers,

mate, backs and shoulders were never made for that sort of work, working in the lift industry is like that.....thats why I left....
eg when doing tests involves lifting hundreds of those 56lb weights with the bar through them in and out of the lifts to do load tests and drop tests.....someone else can do that thank you....

Well I was beginning to wonder until Mel exclaimed "I ain't too old for this"---- attah boy!
I am nudging 65 and I still have three young 'uns in the house, another three have left the nest and some say I have been on "the nest" for too long, so my quiver is full so to speak!:o:)
That all stated, I took my missus Linda (16 years younger than me and kids skiing last weekend, Colorado Ski Resorts | Skiing & Snowboarding at Sunlight Mountain (http://www.sunlightmtn.com/)
The eldest of the three Dennis Jnr (14) has had lessons as a small kid in the past, so for him it was like riding a bike again.
But for my youngest two, Katherine (11) and Gareth (9) it was their first time!
Oh fireworks! Having got all the gear on the young 'un I told him to try the kit out down a very slight slope with all the girls. He wiped out, and damaged his male image in front of girls! Bad karma!
The kid had a total melt down and became unglued, throwing his kit all over the patio!
Now I have experienced this before with his eldest brother who is now 24, but I wasn't so sympathetic this time I wasn't a new dad, so I barked out "Put those bloody skis back on and ski down to the chair lift, and wait there"!
As I put my skies on the little tyke cussing and moaning at me gets to the front of the queue and boards the chair lift alone! I barged my way in the queue to catch up, but ended up about seven chairs back. Having got to the the top of the green stage summit, about two miles down, the kid is off! :o
As they stop the lift for some reason and I am left there dangling in the air watching my kid going down the slope flat out!:o
I got off and chased him down the piste I kept thinking the little tyke will kill himself. But No! He made it to the ski base, with a new attitude. This time we went both up together and he accepted a few techniques/ lessons. That afternoon we all went to the summit of the mountain. Yikes! Some challenging sections--guess what! My kids out skied me as I followed them down, I remember saying "I AM TOO OLD FOR THIS"------:D
I think next time I will take my grand daughters as well in the Disco , put reigns on them, let my own young 'uns go hot shotting down the slopes and I will enjoy a more leisurely afternoon on the slopes.
Grand dads have it to do yah know!
Still I did get a compliment from a sweet young thing about 25 "ish", saying for an old guy I like your techniques, you ski well! Oh I was in love again and wish I was 25 yet again 'cept knowing what I know now!:D
Cheers and have a good weekend, I am going ice skating with the ladies this Sunday!

I know what you are on about........
Wait till you are around 50,then see how you go:o
Something to look forward to.:(
I go to the physio every few weeks now,it really helps me.
Also have a personal trainer.
If i didn't go to them i would struggle even more than i do,when at work.
If i can,i also try to get the young guys to do the heavy jobs, doesn't seem to worry them

uninformed, I know where you are coming from with drains.
I've had to form up, and pour drain footings before and that part is just as bad as putting the grates in. You know damned well if you are even a poofteenth out, you are gonna have some problems later on :o Especially once you, or the other blokes have had to manhandle dodgy Chinese grates into place :D
zedcars - terrific story.

yeah these footings had ligs placed @ 300c to tie it into the slab when it goes in. So having form boards set up to height to support the ligs in the footing concrete, I was the lucky bugger that got to neel down and screed the footing which was 300 below ground level....that was fun, NOT!
I can still go for a stand up paddle surf for 3 -4 hrs straight no worries...just get hungry and thursty. but that low ackward stuff just kills me now haha

You poor old bugger :p (and that goes for Serg too :D )
Oh wait, I'm not far behind Paul..... :(
At least I sort of get paid to keep sound and fit these days, I think...
