Have a 99 manual TD5 and am looking at converting to auto. Would it be better to install engine, auto box and transfer case out of a 2004 model.
Present engine etc has done 240k.

Quite frankly it is easier to sell your car and buy on with an auto. It's not a job to be taken lightly. It's not just the mechanicals that need replacing. The whole car interior needs to be striped out as the whole wiring loom needs replacing. I saw a post a while back on the forum. I'll see if I can find it.

What if you installed a 4HP22 rather than a 4HP22EH. No electronics, just like the manual transmission and it should be slot in. You would however lose the cruise control and have to work out how to make the kick down work with an electronic accellerator pedal.

Not just cruise control. You won't get any of the changed behaviour with low range selected, like the TC locking up with revs over 2000rpm and zero throttle which is designed to assist engine braking, nor will you get the Sport and Manual behaviours. May as well buy a 1998 D1 if you were going to head down that path.

What elec accelerator? My 2000 D2 doesn't have it. Though the hp22 only has cable kickdown so you'd potentially need to add a cable pulley for it but if you're not using the cruise control a longer cable could be routed to it.

Those two functions dont really define all of the upgrades to the Disco2. :D It'll still be very capable. Hey, its a possible option as opposed to selling the vehicle for another.

The TD5 uses 2 or 3 (depending on year) potentiometers to sense throttle position and this info is fed to the ECU which then controls the motor. The V8 I think still has a cable and also cable operated cruise control.

...Interesting......you have no mechanical connection.....no td5 has mechanical connection to fuel pump or injectors.....if you have no electronics how do the injectors know how much fuel to supply to your engine? I'm not having a go at you just trying to put it into perspective.
