Just a white with no options... pretty boring I guess... but I was already spending too much! Would've loved to get the e-diff tho...

Paid a deposit and just waiting for finance... getting it from QLD (I'm in Darwin). The Darwin stealer wanted $10k more for a MY12 (he didn't know about the 8sp model, or even about the Main Event sale... couldn't believe it)

So yeah pretty excited... my daughter and fiancé will probably drive it up in a week as they live down there and are keen to visit..

How are folks finding the new 8sp and the new model in general? One thing I'm wondering is whether the 8sp gives you a lower geared 1st low or how does it compare?

Cheers
Paul

Congratulations. I know what you mean about no options because the base price is a financial stretch.

I see the sense in getting your family to drive it up but not sure I could handle entrusting the pick up and first drive to someone else.

Anyway well done. You're gonna love it.

Thanks James :)

I should mention its an SE SDV6...

Yeah it's a bit hard being in Darwin... it would cost me a couple of grand to truck it up... the young folks driving it up will probably be more nervous than me :)

I was thinking I'd drive it up but they are really keen to visit and getting leave would be hard for me...

Congratulations mate, you do what you have to get it there - I have no doubt you'll have strict rules in place for the drive up;). It's the wait is the hardest part!

Congratulations on purchase.
Keep us posted on how it turns out, how the 8 speed goes.
I might be upgrading in 2 more years from my 2012 D4.
I cant imagine a better car than what Ive got, but maybe.....

Hey Paul

I picked up my 2013 on Thursday and absolutely love it. It took me the drive home to get used to not resting my hand on the stick. Changing into reverse to park has caught me out as well. (air shifting)

Actually took it off road today, which I hadn't planned on doing so soon, and it was outstanding.
Mate has a Prado which took 3 attempts (last being a run up) to get through a rocky section and the D4 just rolled up on rock crawl without breaking a sweet. The 4WD info screen was interesting aswell. I have e diff fitted and from what I could see, it was being engaged on the screen.

The only thing I found is that the paddles are easy, if your not careful, to bump into manual mode while off road but apart from that it's great.
Have noticed a little lag off idle which I wasn't expecting, mind you that is just in D and not using S or manual shift.

Enjoy your D4, it's worth getting excited about.

Cheers Scott

Picked up my base model 8sp D4 a couple of weeks ago, traded my Freelander II in for it and I must say I am impressed the 8 sp is a gem. The base model is 3ltr but only 155Kw and less torque than the Sdv6 does this mean it's a single turbo?

A couple of the steering wheel controls do not work and will not work until a software upgrade comes out shortly otherwise all good.

At $69.5K on the road not bad.

As far as I know carcrank still two turbos but engine just detuned a bit - perhaps some minor physical differences in injectors or something I've read. Yeah that's a lot of car for under $70k - you won't get a GXL Prado for that and that comes with a noisy gutless engine, no traction control, no air suspension, 2.5t towing etc etc... :)

yes - still twin turbo.

Hey carcrank, does that price include any options mate?

Hi Paul,

I know how you feel, I have had mine for a year and I sometimes still feel that way about my D4, but it is the best vehicle I have ever owned and don't regret the pressure on the budget.

Congratulations to you and the others on your new cars - Enjoy!

I picked up our 2013 model 2 weeks ago and love it, had a D3 HSE previously now have the SE Black Edition. I agree that it is easy to bump the paddles into manual mode, how do you know if you have the detuned engine. Does it only come out on the basic models ?

Yep only comes with the TDV6 model - both the SE and HSE are SDV6 which is the 183kw. I think the 155kw TDV6 would be fine still - not sure how noticeable the difference would be and I think I've seen slightly better fuel economy figures for them.

I see a few folks have said fuel economy and smoothness of engine and gearbox improves after the first few thousand k...

The price included leather ( a $700 option) we did not have much choice if we wanted the Main Event price, cars here or nearly here could be had for that price so no special orders as car had to be delivered before the end of the month to get the free on road and no dealer delivery. My wife wanted a sun roof but because there was none on the water it would have cost us about $10,000 extra as we would have missed out on the deal, needless to say she did not get the sunroof.

One more thing, while the dealer was trying to figure out the steering wheel controls they lent us a MY12 D4 2.7 and the different is amazing, driving them back to back the new trans is much better with always the right gear, especially when taking off when the 2.7 seemed a bit wheezy as it held gears maybe longer.

The thing I regret not getting is the sat nav/reversing camera, I am messing about with the wireless one but means another screen so may end up sticking it on the windscreen. Apart from that I love it.

When I went to trade in my 8 yo TDI for a D3 in 2005 the changeover price was over $80,000 so I bailed, and bought the Freelander II when they came out instead, which was a great car but not up to towing the wife's horse float. So $69,500 before changeover is a hell of a deal in comparison.

We wanted the base model with a few options:
7 seats, all leather
Hi-line audio
Rear camera
Rear air-con
E-diff
Extended warranty

The e-diff is almost impossible to get unless you place a custom order, so that's what we ended up doing, even though it meant missing the Main Event sale. I shopped around with a few dealers, most of whom were talking prices in the low to mid 80's. Eventually we got a price of $77.5k, we seemed pretty good to us.

At those prices new, the second hand lr4's listed on carpoint will never sell....

Mojo, all those extras for $77500 is a very good deal, I'm hopeless with the thumbscrews!

Yeah, I'm not really much of a haggler either. I think it helped that Brisbane only has one dealer, so everyone else I had to approach over the phone, which makes negotiating a bit easier - for me anyway. I just told them all that we had test driven a few cars and decided on the D4, and it was now just a matter of who gave me the best price. Pretty easy sale for them, no need to try and pursuade me to buy the car as the decision was already made - all they had to do was come up with the best numbers!

That price doesn't sound right. Too low?

carcrank

It's the recommended retail and because of the main event there is no dealer delivery or on road costs. It is just a Disco 4 not an SE so only 5 seats, no electric seats, no auto folding mirrors, 155Kw instead of 180Kw, halogen headlights, no E diff, etc etc etc

Just a good basic car.

Cheers

I think it's 520Nm

Edit: the figure "155" refers to the power which is 155Kw. The torque is 520Nm.

I think the D4 just made the sunset look just that much better.

Thanks for sharing the pic.
