Had the chirping, checked the front shaft and it is dead.

Being American, they would be drive shafts to suit a V8 - something in the back of my cloudy memory suggests that the TD5 has a different drive shaft? I'll leave that for someone more knowledgeable to confirm/deny.
Have a look at Tom Woods drive shafts - they are very good as a few members here will attest to.
Cheers,

I just ripped mine out & took it in to Hardie Spicer up here in Kal. They fitted new heavy duty greasable uni joints, balanced and painted the shaft and gave it back. Has been running without problems since.
Also extended the air-con drain at the same time to remove part of the cause of the problem. ;)

The Td5 Auto had a different drive shaft. There were two variants. The early one had a standard sliding joint. This was later replaced with a design that has ball bearings in the sliding joint. There was an issue with the standard joint binding due to torque increasing the plunge stiffness of the joint which resulted in noise//vibration being transmitted into the car at certain rev ranges - 2400rpm springs to mind. The change was made during the 2001MY. The later shaft is TVB000220.
And just had email from a US retailer warning international customers that USPS has put their international charges up by around 40% effective 27/1/2013. Ouch.
cheers

Ta. Rough indication of cost? I think your old D2 was a later model?

G'day Paul,
Now that makes me wonder if the 2250 rpm vibration has anything to do with the front drive shaft? I had a 2001 Disco with the vibration issue and nothing would solve it despite my numerous complaints to LRA.
My current Disco has it albeit mildly but it has become worse over time.
I think I might pull the front shaft sometime, drive around without it for a while and see if I notice any difference - a long shot I think but worth a try.
Cheers,
Franz

If you want to know anything about the front prop shaft look at this one.

It's been in the oven for a while.

$435+gst to have it rebuilt at hardy spicer with greaseable unis,
Day after I dropped it in to be rebuilt I noticed Roverlord are selling a fully greaseable rebuild kit for $185. I would have gone that option if I saw it in time.

Whether the later shaft will solve the vibration issues is a matter of debate. I suspect that in a vehicle which was in factory condition it would make a difference. But once you are into 100K+ km other wear is going to be the problem. I seem to recall a member here recently posting that after rebuilding the engine, transfer case and auto the vibrations had pretty much gone. That suggests to me that it's the cumulative effect of wear of the whole system, rather than a single component. It would be nice to pin point the biggest contributors, but as the "Ultimate Solution" threads 400-500 posts indicates that is a bit of a pipe dream.
From the pics I've seen the ball bearing sliding joint is going to be the last thing to wear on the shaft.

My front uni just went on my front shaft of my D2. Can it be driven without the front shaft, if I take it out to drive 100k's home.

Mine was starting to make the clicking sound with a bit of vibration so got home and checked the front shaft and the uni had started to fail. So whipped it out and took it in to Hardy Spicer in Eagle Farm Qld and they rebuilt it, balanced and painted all done for $275 as they didn't have the replace the bearing in the double cardian. They said as long as you get onto them early it's just new unis. Couldn't recommend them enough 2 day turn around.
