An 'Oops moment' on Moreton Island....notice the orange reflection on the rear panel? After 3 years I finally had to use the Maxtrax!!!

Questions:
- did you have the tyre pressure reduced
- did you have DSC turned off
- how did the maxxtraks go?

LOL....that was about four days before everything got wet. Fortunately we got off the Island before things started getting really bad.

18psi....then dropped to 16.
In Sand Mode, Low Range (manual), definately DSC off.
Maxtrax were a breeze...out in seconds.

Situation:

Sand was like talc, this happened in The Desert parking area (fortunately no other cars around...LOL). There is a big stretch of super soft stuff as you approach the end of the road....I was doing about 30kph, so other than slipping around, no issue.

I came round the corner and slowed a little to check out where to turn/park....and that was all she wrote. Tried to gently extract myself and even used Rock Crawl...just kept burrowing in. In what seemed like a micro second I was on the floor pan with Extended Mode initiating. There was a perfect print of the underside of my car on the sand...bash plates, muffler, etc .

Advantage of the sand being so soft, it took seconds by hand to dig the wheels clear (quicker than using my shovel or the Maxtrax). Dis-advantage....rolled off the Trax and went straight under again....:(. In theory, the repeated process took seconds again but the Maxtrax were gone. I'd never seen that before...the sand was so soft, even they sank under...completely vanished. A quick dig and all good again. This time just kept rolling along with no issue.

You could hardly even see the tracks or holes my car had left....there was plenty of evidence of sacrificial beer cartons and toboggans lying around though....I guess I wasn't the first to do it.

I think I'm going to invest in smaller wheels, to be kept for trips.

Cheers,

Kev.

Had this happen up at Fraser in Oct when we were rescuing a Prado on one of the bypasses. Had to dig for the maxtrax twice.
I was thinking of putting 2m of fine rope on each to make it easier to find them next time.

My maxtrax came with orange tell tale straps that you put on them and in theory these should stay above the sand and mud an help you see where they are and drag them out.

I just had a drink with a mate that mentioned those...must be a new addition....great idea though.

I'm sure rope or something else would work fine too.

I was revelling in the fact that I still had the cardboard and zip ties on mine...LOL!!!

I have seen this occur down Esperance way. The wind drys the sand out and effectively aerates it. You end up with sand like talc, and just as soft. Without some momentum..........straight down. Very easy to get caught out. Good you had the Maxtrax.
