Hello all. I have been looking at ditching the 12 volt alternator for a 24 volt to 12 volt converter. Can get a unit with a 12 volt 30 amp out put. I start the ute with 24 volt and the thermo fans and the driving lights are 24 volt. The rest is 12volt including the winch. Will 30 amp be enough? I`m guessing that you can supply / charge a battery through a regulator with one of these units ? I could set up two and possibly have 60 amp ?

I wouldnt be trying to run a winch off of one, ven with a good battery set, once the winch draws the batteries down the unit will see it as a dead short and thats the end of the unit.

better off getting a 24-12v charger, they're usually easy to spot amp for amp they cost twice as much as the powersupply versions.

I have used these in marine applications

SVC Maxi Series GEN II (http://www.intervolt.com/products/voltage-converters/svc-maxi-series-gen-ii.aspx)

Good quality equipment.

My 101 has dual alternators with the 12v one charging my aux 12v battery which in turn runs the ignition and aux 12v functions. I also carry a small cheap ebay 24v-12v (30amp) reducer to run the ignition and 12v functions in an emergency such as the alternator failing.

The 12v alternator is not a good fit on the engine and does hang down in the dirt a bit so requires a bit of maintenance to keep it clean and keep the belt tight.

In the next refit I am thinking about pulling the alternator out completely and have bought a OEX 24v-12v (60amp) multistage smart charger to replace the alternator. I will mount it on top of the 24v battery box and use it to charge the aux battery as it currently is - I am a bit concerned about the ability of the unit to deal with vibrations, dust and even maybe water as it is full of electronics. I will still carry my back up 24-12v converter for emergencies.

If you want to winch you need a setup like I have - 24v -12v charger charging a 12v battery and running the winch from the aux battery. As I do I would also carry a 24v-12v reducer for emergency use but these are no use in charging you aux battery but will keep the vehicle mobile.

it'd probably be cheaper to remotor the winch
