MSD 6a with 95 V8 Disco1

Hey guys,
My bro has got a 4.6 v8 rigg, he wants to replace the stock ignition with an msd 6a system.

Everything has been wired according to diagram; however the white wire needs to connect to the negative trigger wire from the dizzy (Ignition Amplifier).

He believes that the basic msd diagram is not adequate for the job as there are 5 wires going to the coil.

+ White green ignition 12v
+ black wire to noise suppressor
+ another black wire from ignition module next to coil

- White black Duel link earth
- Black from ignition module

there is 3 wires comming from dizzy to ignition module, one of them must be the neggative trigger.


Does anyone have any experience with wiring this system up??

Seems perfectly clear to me. Disconnect the +ve ignition feed from the coil, connect it to the msd red wire and the ignition amp +ve wire. Disconnect the negative side connection to the coil from the amp and connect it to the msd white wire. The white/black wire is the ECU crank pickup and should probably be connected here too. Connect the coil exactly as in the picture and leave off the suppressor. The 3 wires from the dissy pick up to the amp are two to the amp and an earth shield, they are not the coil trigger wire as shown in your pic.

You are effectively replacing the stock coil with the msd and then driving the coil with the msd orange and black output wires.

I thought it had to come from the amp which is on the dizzy? or am I way confused?

Your ignition amp is either on the dissy or next to the coil. Not both. '95 D1 should be serpentine belt engine and the dissy hasn't got an amp on it. The wires from the dissy to the amp should be red and blue after a plug next to the amp. They come direct from the magnetic pickup. Check the resistance across the red and blue with a mulitmeter, you should get a steady reading until you rotate the dissy. This is the pulses generated by the pickup.

Ignition control module, ignition amplifier, ignition module, all words for the same thing. It's a D1, they all work exactly the same, just the position of the "thing" changes from the side of the dissy to the side of the coil.

I'm pretty sure you use the green and violet wires to connect to a magnetic pick up dissy, white wire if its optical trigger or points. You can throw the Lucas amplifier in the bin and use the MSD6A CDI box as the amp.

To use this you will need to buy a MSD tach adapotor. The ECU will not pick up the signal from the MSD without it. If you are using the magnetic pick-up input (green and violet wires) to trigger your MSD Ignition, you will need the PN 8920 Tach Adapter.

Lots of info about putting and MSD6A into a Disco on the MSD Tec Support Forum. If you go to MSD website their are multiple PDF installation instruction wiring diagrams for a host of scenarios for different US, Euro and Jap ignition systems.

thanks for your help mate, i tried so many variations on the white trigger wire. im gona try the magnetic method.

if works im gona shoot the ignition guy that suggested to wire it up with the white wire.

Hey guys, got it all working with magnetic method & Tach Adaptor, however I had to reverse the polarity on the pick up because it was giving me a 20 Degree variation. All in all much smoother through the gears much more power and it hasn’t been tuned yet.

I need to gap the plugs and grab some 8.5mm wires anyone know which msd type would fit?? I’m guessing just universal?

The MSD plug wires are very highly regarded though I've not used them myself. I use Bosch wires on my Disco and Magnecore KV85s competition wires on my 4.6 Rover car with an MSD6AL and Blaster 2 coil. I've tried all sorts including Lucas, Top Gun and Eagle 9mm wires but I think Magnecore trump them all, and they come with a 10 year guarantee. One day I'll treat the Disco to a set as well.

i have just put a 4.6 lump in my P.O.S
I was looking at the MSD
stuff a few months back.
Dose it make much difference to power? what about economy?
are you using standard coil?

A buddy of mine used this MSD box on his 3.9L RRC. We didn't use the stock amp at all. We wired the distributor directly to the MSD box. I'm pretty sure we used an MSD coil, because we had already replaced the stock coil with it trying to troubleshoot his spark problem. It turns out he had received multiple "bad" new amps. The MSD box fixed that problem.
