Hi all.
I was at Autobarn the other day getting some Syntrans when I saw some Nulon diesel engine oil. A full synthetic, extended drain diesel formula 5W30 oil. To me it ticks all the boxes. Currently, i'm using Penrite HPR Diesel 5 5W40. There is also a 5W40 full synthetic available also. What do you all think of Nulon oils? Do any of you TD5 owners use this? Any feedback welcome as I am considering switching over due to the fact that it is fully synthetic.

Yes it can be used just fine...
But the Penrite Blend is proving a very very good oil in the TD5, especially in relation to lobe wear prevention.
Sometimes just because it if fully synthetic doesn't mean its better..
But in answer to your specific question - yes, you could run the Nulon just fine :D

Ditto. :D
I'd run a good 15W-40 HD Diesel oil before certain well known car spec syn oils in a TD5.

I was under the impression that the 0-30 blend formulas were not good enough in the TD5s, even in the good oils and that they came p to speed probably with the 0-40s. It not the viscosity that was the prod, it was the here strength or something else. Also, looking at the the oil viscosity temperature ranges in RAVE, I'd be inclined not to use 0-30 as I think it would be realisitic to go above the recommended ambient temps for tat oil.

I use the nulon exclusively for Td5's unless the owner has an alternate preference.

Thanks Dave.
Can I ask why? Is the Nulon product better than the Penrite?

Sure
No.

in reality it was because it was cheaper for me to get hold of, met the specs required, was locally supplied, and more reliably on the shelves.
It diddnt hurt my engine and the lobes were still looking happy at the 200K Km mark

I was under the impression that the TD5 required a semi synthetic oil and have been using Penrite HPR 5W40 and recall reading that only seni synthetic oil should be used.
Judging by the comments from Tombie and Dave, this is not the case?
Cheers,
Franz

The HTHS (High Temperature, High Shear) film strength isn't good enough (IMO) in some full syn oils that are blended for maximum fuel economy potential.
I'd suggest that's probably where the lobe problem stems from in some engines.
An XW-40 oil is just beefier, although there are some exceptional xW-30's around, you really need to know what to look for to be safe.

Do you mean instead of a fully synthetic oil ?
The base oil blend really doesn't matter in the overall scheme of things, but back in the day only a fully synthetic oil could be guaranteed to last for the originally specced 20,000km oil change interval.
Oils generally are much, much better than they were 14 years ago when the engine arrived and the current crop of 15W-40 HD diesel oils are so much stronger, cleaner and have a longer life than any car spec full syn oil from back then except maybe some speciality race oils which would only best them in one or two areas, eg temp resistance.

starting to think that with these quality oils at 7500km oil change is just too soon...

when I switched to my servicing cause the warranty was up I got some of the nulon sampled and checked, the oil was still good at 15k Km and based on the marginal degradation from 10K-15k (done at 1-1.5Kish intervals) it should have been good through to 20K Km the filtration system in the TD5 and the coolish temps of the oil (large quantity in the sump, oil cooler) and the use of quality oil was put down to its life.
I believe other people have had other brands of oil tested and have had similar results with other quality brands but in all honesty I dont know anyone whose done the tests with k-mart brand oil.
