Hi all
I think my horn has decided to give up the ghost.
It is sounding a little flat and not very loud from inside the cockpit.
Question is how the hell do you get to it?
Do you need to take the left quarter panel off or is there an easier way to get to it?
Thanks
Mick

Hi Mick,
Go in through the headlight hole.
If your place is anything like mine I would guess there are wasp eggs in it
Cheers,
Terry

Now why didn't I think of that?
Question?
How do you remove the headlight?
Does it just screw off?
I reckon I'll replace my horn with an airhorn:twisted:

The horn on my series 3 gave up the ghost the other day...turned out it was a fuse problem...not blown but just a poor connection!
Cheers, Mick.

Hi nuggie , take the side light and indicator out then the plastic suround , that will give you access to the headlight . Then the four screws on the headlight and it will pop out . You then have access to the horn . The horn wires will be the wires for the air horns ...cheers jimr1...

Thanks for your help guys.
I'll change the fuse, and if no joy, I'll pick up an air horn on flee bay & do the swap.
Cheers

I'm in the middle of swapping my horn right now. Easy to get to, just unscrew the light facade, take out the headlight (four screws) dont worry about puttingthe beam out of line, the adjustment is made on the bit you remove anyway so taking it out will not affect it.
The reason. I too thought that the original one was not befitting of the vehicle, so wanted an 'up grade'. No more neep, neep.
Ideally I wanted a horn off of a citron, having owned a citron I know the French know a thing or two about horns but unfortunately a whole lot less about cars in general. I couldn't find one and also (ever since being a kid and watching the movie convoy) had always kinda wanted an air horn.
So I got a steeble nautilus air horn, and fitted that. It was too loud. Loud to the point of not being able to usher people on in traffic for fear of eother starting an altrication or giving a passer by a heart attack. I was concerned that if anyone did ever step out in front of me in the road that using it would cause them to freeze.
So I'm putting the original back in and fitting the air horn behind the drivers side headlight. Bit of a waste of time and effort really, well no. I'm rigging the air horn to a cable pull mounted in the roof console, steady truckin'. Can't wait. I've only wanted one for 30 odd years.
Well that's my horn related post. Wouldn't really have mentioned it but came across this thread and though I might as well.
Good luck.
Ian.

Ian, air horns usually take a couple of seconds to 'spool up', so if you still have the original pansy meep meeper connected, a short jab on the horn stalk will give the move-on signal, holding the stalk gives them a blast. Win win :)

:D Hi mools , You say you wanted an upgrade , no more Beep Beep . I was thinking whoe's job it is to decide what horn to use on Defenders . Job description , (in charge of horns ), so they pick a Beep Beep , they like and forget about it for the next ten years or more . now thats a job I could do . Beep Beep . :D:D

True, I fitted a Stebel Nautilus Truck Air Horn at Christmas as I was sick of the cringeworthy beep beep roadrunner horn. I fitted it behind the opposite light, (the wiring loom is already there on mine).
Now I have two horns if you like, quick jab of the horn gives you the toot-toot of the original horn or if you hold the stalk in for longer than a nano second you get the full blast of the air horn. This is reserved for ***** who pull out in front of me or cut me up:twisted:

From memory you should be able to adjust the tone, have a look on the back of the horn, if there's a lump of silicon or a cap peel this off and there should be a screw underneath, turn this to adjust the tone.

That is Interesting, not heard that before.
I will have to have a look at the back of mine now.

Hi Co , All the older Snail horns had an adjuster screw with a back nut . Standard horns were twice as big , and heavier as they are today . they also had a deaper sound . When thinking about it the first air horns were air , a rubber ball with a brass Bugel .:D:D:D cheers jimr1.

Not just the snail horns had adjusters, a lot of the flat ones used by Land Rover have but are set at factory and then covered up with a blob of sealant. Adjusted quite a few when the honk became a peep. Not exactly sure about the new stuff as in the Puma but I was adjusting them up until I left the Army in 2011, some can be saved others can't but for 5 minutes work it's work trying.

Funny you mention that. I was cruising with the lads the other day & said i should set up a trucky horn with the chain. cooooool dad was the reply. Now that i know there's another nutter out there with the same nutty idea, I'm gonna do it too. Let me know how you go.

I ended up wiring mine up on the same circuit as the original, works well as Lions describes and will use it for the same persons ;).
Still gonna install a pull chain as well though.

Can the air horn just be run in parralel or does it need to be hooked up to teh battery via a switch relay ?

Run a relay, everyone knows how robust Landy wiring is :p

Defoe run a relay, theirs no way I'd trust it on the stock wiring.
Could you imagine the embarrassment? Honk the horn at someone and your vehicle sets a blaze

If you want real horns, buy a pair of twin horns off an old Fiat or Alfa,
Fiamm brand preferably.
The Italians know a thing or two about car horns :twisted:.
I have a pair on the S1, really wakes dreamers up. :D
