View Full Version : Salisbury Truetrac - where to get

So..... This was a hard one, wasn't sure if I should throw it in the market area or what.... After reading a number of posts people are banging on about getting a set of TT or ATB + TT for their defender for as much as a single locker.... Where are people sourcing them from as the best price I've found (in Australia) so far is near $1,200... I'm guessing people are shipping them in from the states?
My plan was an ATB from Ashcroft for the front with a TT in the Salisbury rear end of my TC equipped Defender (don't think I've ever really cocked a wheel in the air, let alone two)

Depending on currency rate you should get both front and rear in the TT's for about the $1200 you are talking about, including freight. His website quotes prices and shipping to Australia.
He gives good advice both over the phone or by email.

I would consider fitting a detroit locker in the rear and the TT or ATB in the front.
You will get more positive traction, you will however get a bit more backlash in the drive train but I think the benefits out weigh the disadvantages.
The cost difference is pretty minimal but you will need to put better axles in the rear if you do this.
Remember traction control shuts off when it heats up

Should be quite a lot cheaper to put a Detroit Locker in a Sals than a Tru Trac too. Mine was only $250 to install and I reckon I could do it myself next time.

X2:D go the Detroit in the Salisbury and get stronger axles like hy- tuff at the same time gbr or lucky 8 in the states. Lucky8 supplied mine and where quick and helpfull by repackaging to reduce postage costs.

Agree the Detroit Locker is Far easier & cheaper to fit into a Salisbury, If you go for Detroit the Soft Locker would be the go.
But for a TC equipped Defender I do reccomend the TrueTrac ( I also got mine at Great Basin Rovers) , Its a bugger to install & get the preload & backlash correct, because you have to spread the housing (however others will disagree).
(Also noted prev post about TC not working in the heat , I havent experienced this yet but about to head north & will find out)

I would recommend Lucky8. You'd get both diffs for under 1000 + postage.
I would not recommend the Detroit locker specifically. I'm not sure what they are like since Detroit was sold, but in the past these lockers would shatter if you broke an axle.
Also, note that a TT is also an ATB diff, but they are not all the same. The Detroit TT is about 3:1, the Quaife about 4:1 and the Ashcroft is 2:1. The ratio indicates how much force from the wheel with least traction is transferred across to the wheel with most traction.

Having dealt with both Simon at Lucky8 and Bill at GBR,you wouldn't go wrong either way.I feel that if you want technical information,that Bill would be the one to ask.
I have a Detroit fitted to my Defender,and have found it to be excellent.
And Simon,since they were bought by eaton and what you get now is the No-Spin centre,they are very quiet in operation,but need to be set up with the correct backlash to operate properly.
Anyone considering a Detroit for a Salisbury,particularly if you run bigger tyres,even only as big as 33's,then I recommend thinking about rear axles.
If you are setting up the vehicle as a Tourer then the ATB/TT combination will be fine.But if you intend the vehicle to be also used as a weekend play thing,then you will be much better off with the Detroit No-Spin,as despite what some others advocate,there is nothing like full lockers.

I got my detroit locker and truetrac from GBR, get them sent seperately to stay under the gst radar, GRR was great and a fraction of the price of going local, postage was $60 each, i then fitted ashcroft 1/2 shafts to the salisbury.

May as well add it as another forum member eluded it to me.
Bill from GBR loves a chat, and is a nice bloke that's great to deal with up front of a sale, but has poor after sale communication.
Not sure in a warranty or hassle capacity, but certainly in a general query.

Looks like Bill at GBR it is...... I had read a heap of previous threads on the Detroit locker v TT in the rear and had pretty much made up my mind since all I really do is touring..... But having second thoughts now, might get both options priced up to compare and then attempt to make the hard decision.

the detroit locker[for salisbury] is just over a hundred dollars cheaper than the trutrac[for rover diff] from Bill

ok..... i can get both of the Diffs with bearings landed for a good price :D.... Where are people getting their axles from and cost?..... As I know I will have to replace my rear axles and covers....
Best i've seen so far is hi tough for $735 for the pair and drive flanges.

I run Hi Tough axles and Detroit in the rear of my Defender on 35's without problems,and the price is the same everywhere.;)
I also recommend that you make sure that you have done the mod to allow your wheel bearings to run in oil,otherwise you run the risk of premature damage to the harder aftermarket flanges
