Not the cream of Australia's intelligentsia are they?
I was bored driving down Pennant Hills road this afternoon and turned the UHF on to scan.
All I heard were expletives, insults, offers to come around and punch each others lights out, and lots of my dog, truck, dad, 4x4, :censored: is bigger than yours talk.
Most unedifying. Certainly wouldn't be doing that with the kids in the car

I can relate to that, way back 27meg was 'ILLEGAL' (way back in the early 70's) I had one, you were always dodging RI's, then they made it legal, it went feral inside of a year:mad:, then UHF came along, sets were expensive, which was good, as it kept the *&*^%$#'s off the air, then as time goes along the cheaper they got the more morons you got.
I still have 27meg, UHF(128 channels),low band VHF and HF, rarely use them, but when I do it's well away from the feral populated areas, and yes I agree all you hear is CRAP, cheers Dennis:angel:

I'm quite lucky, I stick to the truckie channel and all I ever hear are radio checks, cop tip offs and the odd g'day among mates.
Every now and then someone makes a fuss but they either get told to **** off or ignored :)

I agree, normally I do too, and usually only outside of the city, that's why I was somewhat shocked when I put it on scan in the city today at what I discovered.

My work UHF, some sort of GME Product saved my Fat Arse the other day on the Gibb. Bogged 1/2 way up the passenger doors. My Sat phone failed and all that was left was the UHF, I set it on scan and eventually picked up one of the mining leases and told them of my predicament and who i was . They were happy to send out a couple of people to give me hand. Otherwise a good days walk to the nearest cattle station.
Cheers

which really is the only channel if you are traveling. We have a community repeater out here that just services cattle properties and farms so we do not get the mentally deficient drools as in the bigger centers :D But I do agree it was much better when you had to apply for a license and pay! I have had 2 ways for 30+ years and cannot live without them :D Missus complains in the car about the truckies yakking but I love it, find all the "flash for cash" and the " pixie photo centers "!!
I think you have to be selective as to what you can tolerate otherwise it will drive you up the wall! But as a safety net its one of the best!

The road would be pretty rotten right now. Did anyone know where you were, and when you were expected back and so on?
Satphones are funny things and are still pretty hit-and-miss. I had a work one several years ago and you just about had to point it straight at the satellite! I use HF and VKS-737 but have never actually needed it.
Up here UHF is quiet most of the time, and a little busier during tourist season. I'm not sure mine is working - nobody answers!

Davo, The road from Derby to Mt Barnett is pretty good at the moment. Further on there are a few probs. with closures from the Kalumburu T/O through to KNX. The only reason I got bogged so bad this time I was being lazy and instead of making a 3 point turn I went wide and skimmed a table drain and down she went. I always inform someone where i'm headed but in this case panic stations would not have been reached for 24 hrs. Worse case scenario a helicopter would have been sent up if no one had heard from by lunch the next day. And as far as Sat phones go I would rather be without one except my wife is 8 1/2 months pregnant. I think people become too reliant on technology sometimes and forget the basics of survival or just sitting back and assessing the situation.
Now, The time I got bogged at Donkey Crossing up in your neck of the woods is a different story. A story for another time.
Cheers

About the same here in the States when it comes to CB. Got into it in '72 when it was licensed. I paid government and got legal. Have not used it in 30 years!

At work we use 2 channels-one for the ambient-the other for the chilled.
Most of the time its just the shunt driver and despatch yakking away. But every now and then we get the dickhead from Coogee crapping on.:censored:
As I understand it,you cannot have more than a 5kh radio unless you pay for it.
Think its time the authorities paid him another visit.

I have the capacity on mine for it to be programmed for receive only on the police UHF channel.
That and my HF scanner provides some interesting commentary

Used to have that on my work radio over here too - but the Police and other emergency services have pretty much moved to all digital now.
I leave mine on 40 all the time, but as soon as I drop over the top of the hills above Perth it gets turned off, and stays off until I'm on my way out of the place again. Like most major and all capital cities, Perth is full of complete ******* on the radio. Hell, we're even getting a few dickheads on there up in Kalgoorlie lately - but it's most noticeable when school's out. ;)
