Too Much Stuff

Just found some pics of when I went camping in the 1980's
SWB Landy, 2 man tent, Jerry can, Esky w dry ice, cardboard box of food, a billy & frypan & that was it. No recovery gear , just some army wheelchains If I got stuck, (and some walking boots to leg it to civilisation if need be).

Turn forward 30 years.

Its a joke the amount of stuff we pack & carry now. Must minimise.

That said we are about to head off for undetermined period of time towing off road van (see I said we had too much stuff) Still want to keep weight down,
Dont want to take Tirfor Winch but its packed. The cable is coiled up inside spare wheel on back door.

Really I know I dont need it & things would be diabolical if I had to use it, I do have front mounted Warn, somehow wish I didnt have electric winch, then it would stay packed .

What do you reckon is it worth the extra 30kg to bring the Hand winch ??

It will be forward :)

This is because if I get myself into that predicament in the first place it is because I need (want) to go that way in the first place... And have decided that I am going to proceed...

If the route was too hazardous or un-driveable I wouldn't proceed in there in the first place :)

So enjoy the electric front mount and its ease of use, leave the tirfor at home and enjoy your trip :D

thanks, thats what I thought too, only I will have no home to leave it, onto ebay it will be going.

(thats why we are going for an indefinite time) house is on the market and we are not coming back to Victoria :banana:

in the Simpson a few years ago turning the base corner of a dune the sand was so cut away that the Disco just slid sideways into the cutting wall with the 20 year old Tirfor, I winched side ways, and a snatch off the front saved a written of passenger side scraping when snatched! I take it with a warn up front with 3 snatch straps, a snatch block for up hills and a very small shovel now I have two Maxtraxs! Brian 7253 BDB

With a couple of proper size snatch blocks you can winch (from a bull bar mounted winch) in just about any direction you want. Trick is to keep the angles of the cables through the snatch blocks as far as possible under 90 degrees and travelling in the same direction (not like you see in 4WD Action). I have winched backwards from my front mounted winch, admittidly it was hauling a car onto a car trailer connected to the back of my Disco. If you have ground clearance there is no reason you couldn't winch yourself out backwards by running the cable under the vehicle back to an anchor point, wouldn't try it with Dyneema type ropes though, Regards Frank.

Like most of the stuff we cart, great in theory, blessed if you ever need to use it, but mostly just carry it as extra weigh for theories sake.

If your touring you tend not to go too hard. If you've gone that hard and cant get out; well looks like that's where your camping until help passes. Then it's a good thing your touring because who's in a rush. Only the Patrol owners.

It's entirely up to you.

I was on a trip once when the only vehicle with an electric winch had a busted clutch and 2 flat batteries. The hand winch got a work out that day and we were glad I'd packed it.;)

Not that you would necessarily get into that kind of predicament with a van in tow.

Yes days gone by, I hope I learned a little since then, Both my rollovers needed a Tirfor winch.
This time the Defender and Van is our house for at least the next 12months and I'm not going to do anything to help break them. and your right if we do come unstuck (and get stuck) at least were all set to camp for quite a while.

thats my logic, I sold the Tirfor on ebay, bloke picked it up yesterday.
I've got a 12 pack of sandbags incase I get stuck, figure theres not many treed to winch from out there anyway & dont fancy burying the spare.

On the other hand I might get a bit more adventurous when we leave the van at camp and go day tripping. eg Dont think I'd be dragging it into Hickman Crater.

You could always take along 6 star pickets, but that's probably worse than carrying a Tirfor :lol2:
