G'day.
I have a request.
Could someone go to the Congregational section at Karrakatta cemetry and take some photo's of a gravesite ?
Pics could be emailed to me or downloaded here for all to see and discuss !!
Grave EA162 is that of one John Thomas William Smith. I would like to read the insciption.
For the last few years of his young life Smithy went under the alias of Snowy Rowles. From all reports he was a likeable lad but he had some faults !!
Not yet but later on, I would like to visit his gravesite and place a bottle of beer there for him, not to say that he had been forgiven but to let him know that he has not been forgotten.
He was hanged on the Thirteenth of June 1932 at 8AM.
Many thanks.
Robert.

Robert,
if Kev doesn't get there earlier, my wife would love to do that. We'll be heading down there on Saturday.
Will be in touch,
Tim.

Metropolitan Cemeteries Board may have taken over that site. It was up for renewal recently (according to Carly's research). She will call MCB to find out details,
fingers crossed,
Tim.

Thanks Guys.
Lets hope that the gravesite can be located.
It is linked to an important part of Australian history and should be preserved.
I dont want to take a trip over there just to be let down.
My interest of course is in Arthur Upfield ( my favourite Australian aurthor ).
I have all his books and three volumes containing his 220 short stories and articles.
When I come over to WA, I want to explore around the rabbit proof fence area where the Murchison murders took place. Some of the relics and huts are still in existance like Lemons camp, the site where LLoyd and Ryan were last seen and the remains of the haunted hut where Snowy murdered Carron. To actually visit there, has quite some meaning to me. Just like visiting Lenny's area and to stand where he stood, etc.
Snowy played a very important role in Arthurs early attempts to be a writer.
He was a bad lad but it was all a long time ago and he should not be forgotten, by me at least. From what I have read, like everyone else, I think I would have liked Snowy.
I have researched for a few years now and have seen many old photo's of the people involved at that time and also pics and accounts by relatives of those involved but I have yet to find a pic of Snowy's grave. The story is incomplete.
Thanks.
Robert.

Hi, I just got an email from the Cemeteries Board.....
Dear Carly,
Although the Grant has expired for this gravesite, no headstones have been relocated from this area. If there was a headstone placed for John Thomas William Smith it would still be in situ and you may come to take a photo of the headstone.
Please contact our office via return email or phone 1300 793 109 should you require any further assistance.
Kind regards,
Jodie Briggs

We will go there on Saturday and see if we can find anything. I had a quick look at the murder case articles on the TROVE website, quite an odd story. We have spent sometime out in Cue and Mount Magnet way, it is a beautiful area, well worth a trip there (not in summer though!)

Great stuff Tim & Carly. :)
I got a similar reply from Estelle Blackburn, - the author mentioned in that link that would'nt show the pics...
Grave is indeed Number 0162, in the EA Section, Congregational area and the Grant is K0024187 - Dunno if that helps any more than what you've already dug up, so to speak...
Estelle did add - "Funny, you’re the second request in consecutive days..."

Come to think of it tho, she would probably prefer flowers rather than a bunch of red gum tips. Even tho I am only old on the outside !!!

That is terrific, thank you very much.
I will endeaver to get over there for a visit.
Tim and Carly I have sent you a PM with my email address, I hope it goes thru.
Thanks once again.
Robert.
PS: What were your thoughts as you stood there looking at the grave Knowing who he was and what he had done ?
Have you seen the ABC movie "3 Acts of murder" ? It tells the story of Arthur and Snowy very well.
I can send it to you if you havent seen it.
Arthur Upfield also wrote an account of those times called "The murchison murders".

Well, I really felt for his parents, who are buried in the same plot. The headstone makes it clear that they were in the unenviable position of outlive both of their sons. The eldest died in France in 1916, then their youngest is hung as a young man. I'm a father of two sons myself and can't imagine the anguish they must have gone through. That was my prevailing feeling as we stood there.
Tim.
