Rust Prevention

On my Haflinger there are some reinforcing panels that are spot welded to outer panels and rust is forming where the panels overlap. Ultimately I will fill the inner panel with cavity wax but before I do that I want to put in some sort of "creeping" rust preventer that will creep in between the overlapping panels.

I have heard that a product called Penetrol that is supposedly sold at Bunnings but the only Penetrol I can find there is a paint prep product.

So any suggestions on a "creeping" rust control product and where do you get it.

Hello,I reckon you cannot beat fish oil,it stays fluid for a long time and finds it's way everywhere,but watch it on paint work as it will eventually dry and can stain or form a hard crust.

Lanotec or fish oil mixed with diesel.

Linseed oil is what has been used for ages and still is recommended here. Completely non-toxic, it is even suitable for human consumption, healthy and very tasty (IMHO);).

I usually use K&H rust converter and primer. If you apply water first as per the instructions it will creep, and is AWESOME stuff!!!!! Not cheap, but you don't need a lot.

I'm doing up a previosly rusty LSE at the moment, I've put this stuff on, then fill the seam with KCH rust seal paint, then fill the channel and coat the outside of the seam with cavity wax.

I use transmission fluid. I just spray it under the car and go for a drive on a dusty road to let the dust soak onto the oil and let it set a little to stop as much dropping on the driveway. Also made up a spay for grandpa's old stirrup pump and drilled a hole in the end of the chassis and spray oil in there. It takes a bit to get the hose up the middle of the chassis but the result is worth it. The transmission fluid doesn't affect the suspension rubbers and will creep up hill as good as anything else. Can add thicker oil if you think the transmission fluid washes off too quick. It's a lot cheaper to use the old fluid from the gearbox,diff,motor than getting stuff from the shop.
