Well, at least to say Defender forumites.

I've got quotes for long overdue necessary repairs/ replacements for the Defender and its come in at $5K plus. More than I was hoping but certainly not entirely unexpected.

Anyway even after those things are done there's still some rust, broken air con hose, needs bushes etc.

So... long story short...

It's being replaced with a 96 Tdi Discovery. Never owned a Disco before (but having owned Rangies and Defenders, why not!).

I'll be staying on AULRO but vehicle wise will be haunting the Disco1 forum in future.

I think you'll be back. I've owned a 98 300tdi disco in the past. I think you'll be back because of the Coolness factor. Let me explain:

The thing is that a 96 Defender is still cool, even with those issues you mentioned. It still looks great with dents and mud all over. It's still nice to drive because there is so little in terms of fluffy things to break.

A 96 Discovery with the same issues - which it will have - is not cool, it's just a car with big wheels. There's nothing cool about carpets that look tatty, or bits of dash curling up at the edge, or great big holes in the clear coat - A few dents and a Disco goes from a Cool car to a Beater.

:)

I had my defender for sale for months it just sat in the yard while I drove a patrol. Any how I had to take the ute for a run to charge the battery. Any how 3 hours later I came home and took the for sale sign off and whacked it on the patrol Now the patrol is long gone and the defender is just like a an old friend I do t think the hand brake would let me sell it even if I wanted to now

I am sure it's not worth spending the money on the existing bus due to various issues - and others which will be forthcoming in due course.

I know the car I'm buying has been well maintained and problems fixed.

I know the LR mechanic selling the car (it's his own) and he'll certainly hear about it if there are any problems... :lol2:

The auto and air con are "must haves" for the new Minister for War and Finance, as we'll be getting rid of her Jackaroo when she moves up here from Adelaide as well.

Yes I'll miss the Defender. Of course, naturally. And it's not too say I'll never have a Defender again.. maybe in a few years...

But if the Defender has to go (and it does), I'm sure as heck gonna have a LR of some sort in the garage (or in the current case, the street)

Gonna miss that wave a lot !
Fortunately I have the motorcyclist "nod" to fall back on !

Are you telling us you won't wave :spudnikwaving: just cos you're in a Disco???? mmmmh - me thinks he's already starting to turn mmmmh
Mind you, there are times I worry about owning an old car ( I can't afford a new Def ) but from what I read on here I'd be really annoyed at the problems that are evident in the new Defs)

Keep the Deefa as a project I reckon:D. Start with nylon bushes, bought mine in Brisvagas for $170, full set of bear's. You'll be back. :)

I'll be back alrght - in due course - but not with this particular Defender.

Last thing I need is another project - building my Honda bike is expensive enough !

Yes I'll still wave at Defenders... but will any wave back !????

Sell it and get a BMW, you only will need to buy oil every 5000 km or so ;)

There's nowt wrong with a 96 Disco. Cracking car. Ours has only stopped being unstoppable once in 17 years (just after Xmas). Reckon you'll enjoy owning it.

Not a leak in it.

Of course, after I take the front off the engine and later put it back together it probably will leak because I am hopeless.... :lol2:
