My D4 is about to come out of warranty and I am looking into extending the warranty for another few years. Land Rover are peddling their own (underwritten by Allianz) but its two years only and is outrageously expensive at $4k. Avea offer 12, 24, 36 and 48 month extended warranties at far more reasonable prices ($2k for 24 months, $2.3k for 36 months and $2.5k for 48 months). Does anyone have any experience with Avea or any of the other warranty companies and can offer recommendations, warnings, etc?
Cheers

The 2 year LR/Allianz extended warranty on my TDV8 Sport (now gone) was only $2500 a couple of years ago. Is it really $4000 for the warranty a D4 now?.. I'm going to check tomorrow..

Haggle....

And at least the LR one pays up...

Good luck with the other ones!

My Allianz extended warranty was around the $2K mark a couple of years ago - it's been used a couple of times (with no problems) - good "peace of mind" as far as I'm concerned. :)

I'm sure if you get the Land Rover extended warranty when you buy your car you'll get it for less than $4000 - one of the dealers we were negotiating with told me $2500. Although it's probably a different story if you try to extend your warranty after 2 or 3 years though - there's not as much incentive for them to negotiate ...

I got the dealer "Extension of Manufacturers Warranty" came in a nice LR / dealer booklet and underwritten by National Warranty. Cost me $3.5k for 4 years / 120k Kms.
I was told at the time by the salesman that it was exactly the same as the original warranty. WRONG!

From what I have heard this mob refuse to pay out on anything, they will say it is wear and tear and deny the claims. Even a compressor that fails will be classified as a wear and tear item.

Do your research and look at all the T&Cs. I do not think they are worth the paper they are written on!

I self insured. In the 2 years the extended warranty would have lasted I have spent about $600 on repairs that may have been covered.

probably best. Only got it as I thought if I blew and engine or a transmission then I would cover the major items.

Been told though that they consider a trans to be a wear and tear item and not covered

FFS !!!

Hi

I'm a frequent reader (but almost non-contributor) on the forum thus far.
I recently upgraded from a D1 (300Tdi) to a MY10 D4 (3.0), which ran out of manufacturer warranty in January. I wanted to get an extended warranty b/c of the complexity of the D4 - there's so much that "could" go wrong, although reliability seems to have improved markedly.
Anyway, I did a heap of research into this - there's a number of threads already in the forum on this topic - as well as speaking to various LR dealers, Allianz and 3rd party brokers selling Allianz product.
Upshot is that there are 2 types of extended warranty available (both underwritten by Allianz) - provided that your manufacturers warranty hasn't yet expired.

1. Assured Warranty - this is the product LR offer through their extended warranty, and the same product you can buy through Allianz or other provider. It IS NOT an extension to your new car warranty - the coverage is reduced somewhat (refer to PDS - "What is NOT covered").
Best price I could find:
Landrover (Southern Cross LR, Toowoomba) - $3495, $500 off RRP. Note that this includes LR Roadside Assist.
Allianz (Platinum Direct Finance) - $2500. Same warranty, no Roadside Assist

2. New Vehicle Warranty - it is more comprehensive than the product above. The main difference is that a number of items are not EXCLUDED (seats, windows, exhaust etc etc etc). There are still a number of exclusions, but mostly to do with not using the vehicle properly. This is only available through Allianz or other providers, not through LR.
Allianz (Platinum Direct Finance) - $2894.74, no Roadside Assist.

Roadside Assist - both of the above warranty's do not include Roadside assist. They include reimbursement of some costs incurred during a breakdown, and talk about how the breakdown will be repaired. They don't include a number you can call to help you out (like RACQ etc).
A key inclusion in the LR warranty is the provision of a fairly extensive Roadside Assist service. As far as I could find, you can't buy a product in Aus that offers the same level of service/reimbursement as the LR service (which is also provided by Allianz!).

So, what did I do?
Purchased the New Vehicle Warranty (~$400 more than the Assured), and made sure my RACQ membership was up to date!

I'll attach the various PDS's - interesting read. Hope this is useful. :)

Also, forgot to say that the most you'll get is 2yrs extension.
Assured Extended Warranty - 2yrs/+100,000kms
New Car Extended Warranty - 2yrs/+50,000kms

"From what I have heard" - so do you have any experience with this personally?

Have you made a claim that was refused?

Or are you just passing on hearsay?

The LR one is underwritten by Allianz and is expensive as you say.

You can get an "unbranded" one direct from Allianz for about $2400.

There is no material difference between the two.

I took the Allianz one when I bought my D3 last year.

It has already more than paid for itself.

I had the allianz one on my D3 for 2 years (2009-2011) for $2300. 2 small claims and no dramas.

This thread may be of some interest.

If you're reading through this thread (as I am) with a thought to comparing quotes, just be aware that there's quite a difference in costs to warrant a D3 vs a D4 vs an RRS. Also note that insurance prices across the board have jumped a bit in the last few months.

Best I can find at this date for a 2010 RRS is $3924 for a two-year policy.

Cheers,

Gordon

I got the 3yr Allianz product in 2010. Paid around $2900. It has been very fair and paid out on the tail gate lock and lower front control arms (about 85%). About $1500 in total paid out.

On top I have now done gearbox service and changed diff oils.

It has been good peace of mind but knowing what I know now from this site money could go to preventative maintenance on key items.

10 months left to run and it will be interesting to see if any more claims. The compressor is a worry I would not like to deal with outside warranty.

I asked my Mechanic (Ayre Automotive in Brookvale) to do a a full check on the D4 before it came out of warranty when I dropped off the car the manager asked why I wasn't getting the extended warranty. He said the Land Rover one was excellent and that he strongly recommended it. He agreed that in 90% of cases the extended warranty isnt worth the paper they are written on but that this one was different. He said they have made a few big claims and never had a problem. For small things you can just take to the dealer and they will fix it without needing to claim. He wasn't selling it either so no vested interest.

We had one of the door handles intermittentently failing to unlock on the first go. Took it into Land Rover at Artarmon. They asked if it was still under warrenty I said the extended warrenty and they changed the door handle on the spot. No paper work no claim forms. Easy.

My Dad just paid $3500 or thereabouts for extended warranty on his 2010 3L RRS from Brighton Land Rover.

According to the LR Assured Extended Warrant Insurance Policy Document, Allianz Australia Insurance Ltd.

Page 17, Section B

This warranty will cease to operate and no claims will be accepted where the vehicle:

Clause 1. Has been modified from the manufacturer's original specifications, unless endorsed by us.

Question -

I'm considering taking out this insurance but have an ARB Bull Bar, Long Range Fuel Tank and Spare Wheel Swing Arm

Does anybody have any experience or comment regarding successful claims made with similar after market products fitted to their vehicles

Thanks

Agro,

why not just call them and ask the question then ask for the answer to be put in writing if they say its ok with your mods?

Seriously no point asking here because if someone says its ok and later you find the answer was wrong then your the one stuck with no insurance and no recourse.

cheers,
Terry

I have those items and a truck load more on the car. Did not inform them.
I have Allianz and so far it has paid for a Transfer case and an e-diff.
Nobody at the LR dealers even mentioned anything about the extras when the components were identified to be replaced other than wanting a look and a chat about the gear I had fitted myself.
Paid about $2300 18 months ago so it has certainly paid for itself.
You'd have to be a real nit picker (thats being nice) to say a bull bar or long range tank had something to do with your Tranny going or the items I had replaced.
BIG mistake just going for any Insurance on anything based on price, find out how they payout when the **** hits the fan, that's what counts, sleeping easy.
Cyclone Larry gave me that lesson.

I bought the same warranty for my D3 (3 years for $2400), and 6 months later the height compressor failed and was repaired with no argument at a cost of around $2k I believe. I then sold the car after 4 years and 65k on the clock, and got 70% of what I'd paid for it new, helped by the fact the car had 2 years warranty left. Hence I believe the warranty more than paid for itself. I'd like to go for the Alliance Platinum but it's only 2 years so when I sell my D4 it'll have only 12 months left on it. The Avea 4 year option would give me 3 extra years when I sell it which should help to allay any prospective purchaser's reliability fears. However, I've not heard from anyone who has used Avea so I don't know whether they'll be as accommodating as Alliance seem to be, judging by the feedback on this thread. If anyone has experience with Avea I'd be keen to hear from you.
Cheers

I was just quoted $2500 for an extended 2 year "factory" warranty through a Melbourne dealer. I'm assured that it's the Allianz warranty. This was for a car that I'm not even buying from them.

Mind you, the the car in question is less than a year old. I was told that there was several "tiers" to the pricing and that it is cheaper to do it when the car is newer.

Have I missed something?
