Just 'bolted' a brand new Engel 40 litre in the back of the Defender, the intention was to change the rear 12v power outlet to the Engel surface mount power socket - and just discovered the Deefer Clipsal T-socket is permanently live (didn't even realise this was a Land Rover factory fitting - thought someone had done a 'mod' - the Deefer was 18 months old when we got it).

Now plan to just buy the 12v T-plug to fit the factory socket, and run a short lead to a cigarette-style socket (maybe with an in-line on/off switch) so the Engel lead can go straight in. Will this result in much voltage drop - would like to know what you other blokes have done in the back of a Puma to power the fridge (no second battery setup - running off a 'power pack' when shut down.

Thanks.

Hi NQE, if you haven't already settled on a cigarette style socket and plug, you will find the Merrit/ Hella style of plug to be much more secure . They tend to lock in and don't work loose over the corrugations as the standard cigarette style can do . Use the heaviest wire that you can for the linking cord to the fridge if you are making it up yourself.Cheers,130man.

I mounted some hella flat sockets on the uprights behind the rear seats, one on either side, where the rear wheel arches meet the uprights behind the seats..120,000k on crap roads and it held up well and never rattled off.

G'day JC,

Thanks for watching our YouTube channel - yes we are still going out on a regular basis in the Defender - and we need it to get to some of the places we go LOL. We try to put up a new Metal Detecting video every fortnight or so, and somehow getting the Defender into it, just the perfect vehicle for what we do - wouldn't be without it for any money! All the best mate. Warren.
