View Full Version : New Tyres

Fourgearsticks

Just fitted some new tyres to the wagon, used to have 750's on and I decided to go slightly smaller. After these were fitted I don't like the look of it, the wheels are too small. Apart from the looks everything else is good, it gears it down slightly, better cornering, less body roll and smoother ride in the bush as well as on the road.

Clearance off road is slightly less, I don't go into real serious stuff anyway it shouldn't be a problem. I find with the smaller wheels I use the overdrive more often, putting it in overdrive at about 70 k's. It will sit on 100 k's or faster if you want, I usually cruise anywhere from 80 to 100.

They look like a radial tyre that you have fitted? From factory the 107 SW would have had 700 X 16 crossply tyres, 750 X 16 was an option. Iam sure the modern tread pattern would help with better handling and braking more so.
I have an old 86" and will be going a more period looking type of tyre as it would be my daily driver.

205's have wider tread than 750's and they sit squarer on the rim (straighter side walls), but yes smaller dia, about the same as 6.50's. They look like they would be good sand tyres. Tidy wagon :).

I'm always interested in tyres for a S1.I can see that the tyres are marked Blue Streak Terra 205R 16 LT.

Do you know what the aspect ratio is?

Can you tell me what the ply rating is for tread and sidewall? It should be written on the tyre.

Can you give me the heights of the tyre .Ground to top of tyre .

Thank you .W.

As Klonk said, 205's correspond to 650/16. I have a set this size on my S1 88" and they are to be replaced with 650/16 Goodyear Xtra Grip Hi Milers which are a winter tread pattern.

B.S.F. - the aspect ratio will be 82% according to convention. That is, if the ratio is not specified, it is 82. - Last century, nearly all tyres were 82%, therefore there was no need to trumpet it, like the '70' owners wanted to.... :p

The 'R' is for 'Radial' (ply) and LT is self-explanatory.

I have come across 205/80 R16 as well as the ubiquitous 205/70 R16. My old Pajero ran 235/80 R16.- They were big tyres with long legs...

You're right 205/82x16 and 6.50x16 both have a diameter of 29". .W.

I remember when getting tyres for my Series 1 that changing to a 235/80 or 205/80 changed lowered the gearing by 7 or 9% over the original fitment tyres.
I ended up with 700x16 RTM's which were being brought into the country at the time.

Nice wagon fourgearsticks.
I need an overdrive, then I could call mine 5 gearsticks http://www.aulro.com/afvb/series-i-land-rover-enthusiasts-section/159944-1956-series-1-pto-welder-home-made.html (last picture in post #1 shows 4 existing gearsticks)

Any one tried 215 x 85 16?

What heavy tread has been seen?

I have ben told that they are an option and close to 700 x 16 which I think are optimal. I have 750 x 16 and they are too higher geared.

Where do you get them? ( 6.50 x 16)
I have been asking around and googling with no result.

Toyo list them

M55 (http://www.toyotires.com.au/suv-tyre/m55)

Approved for rims 5.5" to 7"
Inflated OD 780mm (30.7")
Can't find the ply-rating but it states it has 'a robust casing construction'

I actually bought them second hand at Brisbane All British Day a few years ago. They are Pommy ones and the spare still has all of it's ice studs in it.

I've since bought a set of 750/16's for the Gunbuggy off Gumtree.
