As we all know, Insurance companies love to find ways to get out of paying.
Not that an event like this has happenned, but I would recomend that your check really closely to ensure you are actually covered.
My renewal came, so checking the details I find that non of my extras are mentioned. Why ? Well if you are insuring for market value, you would think that they add value and should be mentioned ?
After several discussion with the insurance mob handling the Discovery 3, I got annoyed by the run around and decided to go straight to the underwriter and cut out the agent. Fine until they cam back and questioned me about the LongRanger (Out of Town) auxilary fuel tank.
Was this tank removeable or fixed to the vehicle ?
Well as the tank is Fixed they declined to underwrite the vehicle.
Which company ?
ALLIANZ.
Maybe other as well, but I am in the process of moving ALL my insurances upon renewal away from them, (This is happenning in 2 counties, not just here in Oz).
Bewarned, if you have something like this the insurance cover is legally deniable by the insurance company, and bucklys chance of even getting any of your premiums back...
Go check folks !!

It's a minefield alright ! No logic at all to that particular position on the fuel tank eh.
A lot of insurance issues here come down to WHERE you are covered. Many stop covering you as soon as you venture of gazetted roads. Other won't cover on beaches even where the are gazetted roads... etc
I've looked into a lot of companies and in my opinion (do your own research YMMV) the best I've come across are Suncorp and Shannons.
TCIS Insurance was reportedly good too (but not cheap) but I have no direct experience of that .
On insurance generally the whole "bundle up to save some money" is a load of old rot. You won't save any money if a claim is knocked back eh.
Because at the time they were the best available cost/cover I have Contents with Suncorp, Defender with Shannons, Honda motorbike (laid up cover) with Shannons, Suzuki motorbike with QGE.
Pays to do your homework.

I've just submitted an application to TCIS. They state anywhere in Australia, doesn't have to be on a gazetted road. They also request an accessory list, and say that as long as you've told them, they're all covered.
Their quote also came in substantially cheaper than others that I found, accessories included, and for an agreed amount much closer to reality than other companies were willing to agree to.

Allianz are a good insurance company but tick the box "is your vehicle modifed" and you are automatically excluded - no questions asked or discussion entered into.
However they do cover accessories (what is a modification vs an accessory I am not sure) - I have everything added to my vehicle listed and have an appropriate "Agreed Value" - I would never trust an insurance company to do a full payout on Market Value - you will always get the lower end of the scale.

One thing I have to say is that "we" shouldn't have to look closely!
There should be no such thing as "fineprint" when it comes to contracts of any sort. Things that matter and can cause the contract to be null and void or impact on the claim in some way should be in large clear legible print and written in simple words that the general public can comprehend.

My insurance is with TCIS and its underwritten by Allianz!
They are more expensive than most, but you get what you pay for.
I claimed a few years ago....easy as and no issues at all.
TCIS advised that my long range tank is covered and will not void insurance!

Allianz Group is VERY large worldwide and is a big underwriter of other insurers.
The policy details - what's covered, what's excluded etc is up to the insurer you are with - eg T.C.I.S.
Of course this information is taken into account by the underwriter for the policies and the underwriter sets their costs accordingly.
Insurers the set their rates in line with their own costs plus profit margin.
or something.
Allianz group also offers its own policies under the Allianz Insurance name - and these are, as you've mentioned, quite ludicrous.

My D1 is insured with Youi, and have listed all the accessories and modifications with them, with an agreed value for each.
I've always asked about where you are insured for, and with Youi was told specifically that it was anywhere inside the Australian shoreline. Presume that means that if I try and turn it into a boat and sail towards NZ I won't get paid out.......?

When I added all my accessories I had them all listed and added to the insurance. Cost an extra $100.

Be carefull if you lease as the insurance policy they try to get you to take (you can get your own) will probably exclude off road (even farm) and pay only the lease pay out figure.
I am with GIO and have been good to me, more exe but you pay for what you get.

Interesting, I have several vehicles with Allianz & have rung a couple of times to clarify coverage. Generally I have been happy with the verbal responses for subjects like 'off road', 'private property' & 'accessory or modification'.
Wonder how well the 'your call may be recorded' works :)
Golden rule I guess if isn't black & white in writing it might not be covered.

I am with Shannon's and when a car t boned the 110 the other year Shannon's replaced the side steps and long range fuel tank. No questions asked.
Very happy with their service, and would recommend them.

If the Police can issue a speeding ticket and arrest you for drink driving on a particular 'road', your insurance company doesn't have a hope in hell of not covering an insurance claim.....regardless of the sand beneath the wheels......if you are within the law of course. If it's 'Gazetted', it's a road.........(straight from a Lawyer that I know).

Don't listen to their BS!

If in that situation, push it hard....

Cheers,

Kev.

Police can give you a ticket or arrest you for drunk driving etc even on private property, especially, if there is some sort of public gathering taking place. At least that is the case in NSW anyway.
So I wouldn't rely 100% on where you can be giving a ticket as criteria for where your insurance covers you Kev.

Same here, but they are good. Easy and clear policy, both with the cars and the house. Had a claim in the past and as it was only a third party claim - our old Commodore Vs a brand new Commodore, they didn't even want to look at our vehicle to make sure it was road worthy, etc. They took the excess from us and paid for the $8,000 repair to the other car without question.
I went to Commwreck and spent $300 on parts to fix ours...:D

Watch out for the catch...
If ANY modification renders the vehicle "un-roadworthy" they can, and have voided a claim.
So if you tell them you have a 4" lift, they'll put it on the policy.
But if you bend the vehicle, and the 4" lift isnt engineered and approved, you wont get a Brass Razoo...
I am friends with someone who has suffered this fate.
