View Full Version : Vibration @ 100klm/ph

Hi guys,

Any ideas on this, I get vibration throughout the vehicle when I hit 100klm/ph, the front passenger seat starts to shake vigorously and odds and ends behind the seats shake about.

The steering wheel is fine, no vibration from there, I'm thinking maybe the rear wheels are out of balance or is it something more sinister ?

Your experiences/opinions needed.

Cheers.

I would be urgently checking your universals, especially at the t'fer case end.

Mssing and wheel weights. Have you been running low tire pressures lately? Maybe rubbed a tire on a log.
I had a vibration for a fair time at 95 to 100, a steering wheel wobble. Always took it to the same major tyre service centre for a balance and alignment, but nothing changed. I was told it's a mud tire issue.
Eventually out of frustration tried another tire fitter, problem solved.

hi Babs , There are a few things I can think of that can course vibrations . 1 check your wheel nuts are tight ,2 check inside and out side of your wheels to see if you've lost any weights ,3 jack up check wheel bearings ,4 check the nuts on your prop all ends , also see if there is any movement in your CVs , I'm shore others will add to this good luck ..

I too had something similar to this several weeks ago, where the whole car would vibrate between 85-95km/h. It turned out to be the rear cv's.

'Rear CVs' on a Defender, are you talking about the universal joints and double Cardan joint?

Babs, isn't your Defender new? I would not be looking at anything and getting it in to the dealer to check and fix pronto. Well that is what I would do.

cheers

I would first of all stop with the 'OMG!' stuff:o, and get to a wheel balancer ASAP for a basic balance check. As previously mentioned you have probably lost a wheel weight. Approx 80 grams at 100km/h will cause quite a vibe!

Also get them to check the tyres for damage or out of roundness.

Gotta a feeling its the tail shaft out of balance, Daniel & Mitch picked up some severe scratching on it (from the Lithgow trip) has a feeling its outa whack :(

Tyres are due to be rotated so will get them balanced at the same time, and the boys also picked up the front hub seal is leaking, nice (not). back to LR :(

Tyres were rotated and rebalanced yesterday, the excessive vibration is now gone though there seems to be still a slight wobble but I can't tell if its just a normal thing or there is still something else to consider. Could be just normal and I'm now paranoid after experiencing the excessiveness prior.

I owned my Td5 Defender for 3 years. Just before I bought it I had the rear unis replaced and right before I sold it I did the same again. Wouldnt be surprised if this is the problem.
