I bought my D3 SE TDV6 in June last year with about 55000 km on it.

From when I picked it up I noticed that frequently when coming to a halt, it would thump into first gear just before I stopped. The thump was enough to shake the car. It was most noticeable when the car was cold in the morning.

I took it back to the dealer (official LR dealer) who said they couldn't fault it.

Over summer with the very hot days in January, it got worse.

2 weeks ago I took it back to the dealer for a service and told them the fault was still happening.

Over the past two weeks, the dealer says they have driven the car extensively, but cannot fault the car.

I had a discussion with one of there techs, and when I described the symptoms, he said "Oh that is a valve body".

The service manager said he was speaking out of turn, they could not fault it. He said they had tested the gearbox oil and it was fine in quality and level.

I stuck to my guns and insisted that the fault was occurring.

Last night I got a call from the dealer. They said they brought in a "gearbox expert" who also could not fault the car.

BUT (here's the interesting bit)

"we have decided to get the gearbox totally rebuilt" - using all new parts from ZF.

Go figure !!!!!!!!!

I should get my D3 back late next week.

Picked up my D3 today.

They swapped the gearbox for an already rebuilt one.

Drive in/drive out price on the swap is $6300.

This was covered under my extended warranty.

Driving home I went up some steep hills at about 40km/h due to traffic and the gearbox was shuddering as it couldn't make up its mind what gear to be in.

I will have to monitor it over the next few days and if it keeps doing it, the dealer will be getting a D3 coming back at them in a hurry.

Dropped the D3 back at the dealer today so they can again try to fix the gearbox.

It is going back to the ZF specialist who fitted the gearbox so they can repair the reconditioned box they fitted.

I am now driving a D4 HSE SDV6 - not a bad loan car.
