Hi all,

Looking for some advise off someone who has done this before, whilst general advice is ok I do have a wife and neighbours who can provide that, really want to hear from anyone who has actually fitted an ARB roof rack. If you have and it was one of these....

56583

supported by six of these....

56580

and looked a bit like this....

56584

you will be familiar with just how heavy and awkward the whole thing is and how much scope for adjustment there is on the various components.

I had to dismantle mine to ship the Landry interstate, now I want to put it all back together and on the roof again but am a bit at a loss trying to figure out the best order to assemble and adjust everything.

When removing it I unbolted the six clamps holding it to the roof sill, then six of us lifted it off as one piece. But then I had to take the uprights off of the rack to ship it. I have not disassembled the uprights further so figure that this height should be OK.

My major issue is do I put the uprights on the base then mount it as one, or our the uprights on the vehicle and offer the base up to that.

Help and tips much appreciated. Oh and anyone willing to help me lift the bugger back on?

Cheers,

Ian.

I know how heavy the ARB racks are and how awkward they are to position with the legs on without scratching the roof.
As you've got the legs off ATM, I'd suggest the following -

1. Place some old blankets or towels on the roof.
2. With available help, position the main section of the rack on the roof/blankets.
3. Fit legs working from one end to the other but don't tighten right up.
4. Fit leg/gutter clamps but don't tighten right up.
5. Check that everything is positioned correctly then tighten everything.
6. Remove blanket/s

If you were to fit the legs first, you'd have to need to carefully set them the correct width apart and align then accurately front to rear - not easy to get right - much easier to do as suggested.

Good luck.

I'm not sure about setting them up, but for installing/removing, I used to swing it off my garage roof and then drive the car out from under it.... actually I'd just leave it swung when it was off the car. It might be a good way to do it if possible when setting it up for an installation. I'm sure ARB/Traction4 at least have a gantry to do the same.

The correct and easiest way to do it.....put it on a table and put it together that way.
Put the legs and mounts on loosely, you can easily adjust height and width as you go.

Mount it up complete - with a lot of help, adjust and tighten up.
