Hey Guys for a Tourer around Oz I would prob buy a diesel Defender..

Now my question is what would be best for a budget weekend beast:confused::confused:..35'S twin lockers ect

A petrol V8 would good..I have seen heaps of cheap as Disco's on the web..but would it be worth searching for a V8 country 90?:confused:

Just needs space for recovery gear and enough for a day trip..

I'd get a diesel Defender for that one too.

I d go/have gone V8 disco. As you say there are heaps around and if its a weekend toy there'll be plenty of panel damage and the like. Cheaper and easier to get spares for.

Good luck finding a V8 90, rare as hens teeth, would have to be a personal import...
D1 is the go.
(BTW it is County not Country so your search terms might not bring up everything you seek)

I went out last week in my Tdi 110 for a day trip with a mate in a V8 D1.

Go for the diesel Defender.

fewer over heating issues
fewer water issues
looks better
cheaper to run
no need to refuel on the day
looks better
easier for bulky cargo (hand winch, esky etc)
bigger tyres
more accessories available
and it looks better

Just one Defender - then you always have your water tank, hot water, diff locks, long range capacity...

The same car is so good at both ends of the spectrum. I read somewhere recently that of the two iconic off roaders, Jeep was the weekend toy and Land Rover was the expedition vehicle. Mainly because jeeps can't carry anything.

But looking at capability, the Defender's better at weekend work anyway.

If possible financially it's good to have a second vehicle that you don't mind knocking the crap out of it.
If you're going to put 35s lockers etc as you say you will be attempting some fairly gnarly sections that you wouldn't do if you were in your touring vehicle. It all depends on what you want out of it. And there is not much difference in ability off road between a tricked up defender a tricked up disco IMHO

Good point dave:cool:..like for extreme stuff..I want to be able to roll it and not worry at all, also force it against banks and stuff to get through hard tracks ect..

Touring I mean like the cape and simpsopn desert and Vic High country ect:)

If your in vic look around for a bobtailed RRC or d1, or as someone else said get a defender 110 ute and cut it's tray short. Easier to get rego, fit a roll cage and bigger tyres to a def ute without cutting up the bodyThen if you get a def made before 02/03 you get a salisbury axle which hangs a touch lower but is far stronger than the rear axles in the d1/rrc.Go for a troll through some of the U.K suppliers sites to see what options are out there.
Gwyn lewis, x-eng, QT, terrafirrma and numerous others will give you ideas on how to increase suspension travel. If you want a cheap rear diff lock look to the u.s to grab a detroit(lucky8)for the salisbury or ashcroft in the U.K for their air locker and stronger axles, cv's and everything else drivetrain.

frantic..yeah a 110 ute seems like a good way to go..do the 300tdi's need much in the way of power upgrades or are they pretty grunty for most stuff?

Why don't you pop up to British Off Road and check out their comp Disco 1's and also a couple of the staff cars, they will tell you then what would be the best vehicle for your needs, I know that they use their vehicles up at Landcruiser park at Jimna.just ask for micheal "Ninja" at the spares counter, they are also a TerraFirma agent, and can explain about Cranked Radious Rods etc.

They can also "breathe" on a 300TDI to give it more grunt.

cheers

A salisbury axels and diff aye? are they the same as series Landy's:confused:

Why would Land rover change to a weaker diffs and axels after 02,03 which is midway through the TD5 MODEL?
