ABS

G'day, I have a 97 Disco SE V8i (with extractors!!) .. anyway I have an intermittent problem with the ABS. Sometimes for no reason what so ever the brakes seem to just work oh so very poorly. I push teh brake pedal as hard as I can and she only just grinds to a halt. I get some feedback through the pedal and in turn my leg ... but it a bit scary at times. :o ABS light is on sometimes and off others.
Does anybody have an idea on this as my local garage hasn't got a tool to connect to the computer?
