View Full Version : '96 Defender wipers not self parking

G'day all,
The wipers on my '96 Defender 130 wont self park, they just stop wherever they are when you turn them off. Also, the intermittant function doesn't work, they just keep wiping continuously without any delay.
Before I start pulling stuff apart, is this likely to be a problem with the relay (hopefully something simple like that) or is it more likely to be a problem with the contacts in the wiper motor or something else.

Hoping someone has tackled this problem before.

Any help appreciated.

Cheers, Murray

its going to be the park switch, which clips to the side of the wiper motor,
bugger of a job,

When I did mine the little spring clip fell inside the wiper motor, %$@&%$

make sure you dont get Britpart or youll be doing the job twice.

Not that hard is it?

I changed the whole motor on mine when it burnt out. From memory there are only a few screws holding the corner of the dash on at the passenger side.

It was a while ago but I don't think it scarred me.

I should add that I did mine with the dash inplace, using a borescope & a double jointed arm & some bent pieces of wire up thru the speaker hole, would have been faster & easier to to pull the dash out.

Should be able to do it in less than 30 minutes

Wiper self parking and intermittent function stopped working in my '97 build Defender 130 several years ago. Problem was in red relay thing under left side of fuse panel. It is still there minus cover. Recall something like the pivot on the relay contact came apart. Forgotten what I did to make wipers work. Probably bridged to bypass problem. Needs replacing to restore intermittent and park function. However, I have not been driving in the rain regularly enough for motivation to spend money on a replacement possible Joseph Lucas, Prince of Darkness type electronic device.

if your going to replace the wiper relay do yourself a favour and buy a No 99 VW wiper relay, Direct plug & play - interchangeable for Defender.

infinitely adjustable intermittent timing facility added, just hold the wiper arm down for a second, let it up, then wait the amount of time you want between your wiper wipes (say 15 seconds) & press it down again, hey presto it will wipe every 15 seconds, and forever keeps that time in its memory until you repeat the cycle

Thanks for the replies,
It doesn't sound like a big job, it's not that hard getting to the wiper motor.

I replaced my park switch some time ago, but it turned out to be a wire that had fallen off the ignition switch that powers the wiper park circuit

I like the sound of that... works on any Defender?

No99 VW relay works for sure on Td5 and Pumas, not sure about Tdi or before,

the Lucas relay that came out of mine is part no AMR 2341
