So i just ripped my left rear mudflap off my D90, and was wondering if I legally needed to replace them ;).

I probably will, but was wondering if it was mandatory in Victoria to have mud flaps fitted?

Yes they are required and have to be the correct length from the ground as well. The police sometimes do blitzes on raised 4wd's and people don't extend the mud flaps. Mine you they would have to be wanting to get you for something if there looking that hard, if not that then something else.

My understanding is that there needs to be protection from the centre height of the wheel.

Cheers, Mick.

I thought they needed to be a minimum height of 300mm from the ground.

See Section 14 of thsi:
Vehicle Standard (Australian Design Rule 42/04 - General Safety Requirements) 2005 (http://www.comlaw.gov.au/Details/F2011C00102)

We are talking about mud flaps not mud guards? I havnt had mud flaps for years as they were ripped off 4wding at least 4 years ago and have had no problems with rego checks or police:) series flaps are almost the same as defender ones AFAIK

Just got the quotes back from the dealers here in Victoria, and they are very expensive bits of rubber hanging off the back of the car...

I think I'm going to be visiting Clarke Rubber later today to make one for myself.

For something like that why go to a dealer - I would be trying Landie aftermarket suppliers.

You could also try "Purple Pig". I bought a large piece of rubber from then to make some mud flaps.

I've never had any luck with landrover mud flaps. They are expensive and short lived. I have a roll of the plastic that rally cars use that I will be fitting next.. along with hinged mounts. Hopefully this lasts longer!

It must be that time of year. I ripped the rear left one off my 130. A tad annoying as I just replaced all 4 a few months ago. Mine were aftermarket this time I will just make my own.

UK suppliers by airmail @ 30% of that price (airfreight included).

You'll just need to cut the hole/ cut out in the LHS one (for a 90 at least, can't remember if a 110 has the hole/ cut out)

I keep melting the left one (Puma 90) and while LR changes it every 6 or so months when it's in for a service, warranty runs out in April and I'll be having to pay for them in future...

Lou

A lot of the time, mud flaps get ripped off when we reverse causing the flap to be pressed against the tyre (e.g. by a shrub) and the tyre pulls the flap from the mounting.

A light chain can be used to restrain the flap from contacting the tyre in normal conditions and can be shortened by moving the chain to another hook to pull the flap up where it is right out of the way in more difficult conditions (e.g. rocks and mud holes).

Hi , my son brought two truck flaps from Dandenong for $10 each then cut them to shape , his only complaint was they were white , so he sprayed them black , they came up all right , if not after market, there about $40 pair , hope this helps . Cheers jimr1 :) ..

Clarke Rubber as said before, or old conveyor belt... Buy a length of decent piano hinge... Not the skinny Bunnings stuff. Cut two pieces to suit your flaps:D, bolt to the taper part of the xmember and the top of the flap. Then pull the centre pin of the hinge out and weld a M12 spring washer to the end of it as a finger pull. Hey presto, removable flaps. If ya get stuck finding decent hinge, PM me as I think I have 2 off cuts from the camp body project! I'll post them too ya if they are long enough. Cheers!

Mine was $110 (without fitting) for a rear left... from Land Rover.. :(

Never again.. I've seen them for half that including freight from the UK.

Thank you for the feedback.

Managed to drill out the rivets in the damaged flap, cut and reattach the ripped off rubber as a temp fix. It is about 3 cm shorter that the driver's side rear flap, but still looks pretty stock.

Also looked at after-market ones, but most look like a TD5 ones, which does not have the exhaust cut out as large as the one for the Puma. I think Australian vehicles have exhaust that point to the back, vs exiting from the side for the rest of the world. Could be wrong (probably am).

Will eventually look to the piano hinge idea, but am also toying with the idea of just getting wingbolts(?) to attach to the existing holes, removing/fitting them while I air up/down.

Headed for the Vic 4WD show this weekend, and apparently some Wranglers got pulled over by the boys in blue, getting 'canaried' for driving without mud flaps..(amongst other things like massive lift kits).

Cheers!

Sometimes known as 'Polybelt or Polysheet" But is it polyurethane or Polyethylene? I know its the same stuff Poly pipe is made out of. Its great for lining stock yard panels and stock crates and of course mudflaps :) and as you say it lasts!!

The main issue with the "home made" mudflaps are that a 90's rear mudflaps essentially form part of the vehicle's "look".

The are mounted on the rear cross member and sit flush with the rear panel. Even the slight melt caused by freeway speeds to the LHS one is very evident when you drive behind them.

No argument on the strength and suitability of the aftermarket products (conveyor, Poly E and U), but I for one don't want my daily drive (Puma 90) to look too industrial...

At $15.48 each for the fronts and $38.22 each for the rears (Genuine LRUK) from Devon 4x4, you are just back on LRA's $110 for one.

Shipping should be in the region of $45 to $55 and you've on your way, especially if you just buy 2 or 3 sets of rears as a group buy!

Cheers,

Lou

Too industrial?? :o Hang on! are you sure we are talking about landrovers here? Last time I walked into the shed and looked at my 110 it screamed INDUSTRIAL!! I think they coined the term!!! :Rolling: Hmm. I may have to check these swanky 90's out!
Cheers Scott

I have been looking for some to replace the ones on the camper trailer and found some pretty good looking ones at Super Cheap today. Quite neat heavy duty looking. There $30 a pair rounded up a few cents.

Ok left myself open for that one...!:D

Maybe I'm just snobby and like the Land Rover badges on my mudflaps!:wasntme:

Wouldn't mind the front ones as poly but the "proper" ones looks better on the back IMO.

Lou

Having suggested conveyor belt in an earlier post, it reminded me of a story that happened in the UK.. a good mate bolted two nice big pieces of conveyor belt to the back of his newly acquired Ser 3 SWB, and off we went on one of the many 'Green Laning' excursions from Ag College to get out of sitting thru a lecture about the ins and outs of differentiation, transposition, rah rah rah, (still have no idea what each is!!). Anyway, as he was running 600x16 pizza cutter Avon Rangemaster tires, he soon became bogged.. Me being me quickly spun my V8 powered Ser 1 around, attached my KERR rope and charged off in the opposite direction at warp speed. This worked so well that he came out of the hole at twice the speed he'd entered it, leaving both mudflaps in the hole, still attached to the outermost part of the rear xmember! The middle part didn't fare much better as it was now facing the sky! I learned several lessons that day. 1, check everything when using Kinetic Energy Rope Recovery ropes, inc xmembers. 2, Buy a longer rope... Well..... he was a big bloke and it hurt!!! :D
