Dear P38a Community
Having owned a P38a for a while now I appreciate the value of owning a diagnostic tool to sort these gremlins that pop up from time to time. What I would like to know is where to get one of the handy tools and which one is best and how much and can you buy them second hand
Any comments would be greatly appreciated. I love my 17 year old Range Rover and intend to keep him rolling magnificently for many years to come
Kind Regards

there's an option of getting a faultmate or a nanocom.. both are nowfrom the same stable "Blackbox Solutions". Have a read of the earlier posts in the Diagnostics part of the forum to get an idea of what you might want. Gooogle Black Box Solutions Faultmate it's all there...

I still believe that almost all engine troubles can be investigated/resolved with a good OBDII scanner (either an ebay handheld, or Kiwi BT adaptor plus Torque app on android). Try this first.
If you are having problems with other systems like EAS, ABS, CC, GBOX, etc then one of the angrier tools will be required. Of course, since I have bought a faultmate extreme, I have never really used it. Had I not, I would have needed it every weekend. :)

I believe that these days the Nanocom is better value for money, although I also have both FaultMate and Nanocom.

Hi Fellow P38a ers
Ive have looked at diagnostic forums and come to the conclusion that the fault mate / nano com seems to be the unit of choice not to mention a steep learning curve by yours truly . Does anyone know if there available in Australia as the Hardrange Team no longer sell them
Any info much appreciated Thanks for help so far

I've got a faultmate msv-2, ordered it direct from cypress (from BBS themselves). Highly recommended, but I've never used a nanocom either...

There was a guy in Melb selling FaultMates a few years ago. When I was still selling the FaultMate, I used to get calls from people frustrated trying to contact him. Drove a lot of business my way for a while... sorta helps when you answer the phone and emails ;)
AFAIK there is no one else in Oz selling them any more.
One of the reasons I stopped selling the FaultMate is because the P38 modules for Nanocom were released in early 2012. It wasn't really cost effective for me to buy and sell the Nanocom as my distributor discount, import duties and GST overhead meant they were significantly more expensive landed in Oz.
My tip when ordering from BBS in Cyprus - select EMS Postage rather than DHL. It is cheaper and still usually arrives here in a week or so.
As stated previously, I am a big fan of the FaultMate and Nancomom... I have both.
The differences?:
FaultMate can be licensed for most types of Landies. Usual licence is single-VIN. Multi-vehicle licenses are expensive. Really requires a PC/Laptop to access most functions.
Nancom only works on P38, Disco 2 and Defender. Is multi-vehicle within vehicle type (i.e. P38 GEMS, P38 Motronic/Thor, or P38 Diesel). Touch screen does not need a PC/laptop.
Sam - Hawkeye? Don't bother... I have a couple of mates here in Canberra with Hawkeye's and they come around to use my Nanocom instead a lot of the time ;)
Cheers, Paul.

Hi Bruce, I've had the faultmate extreme MSV-2 for a couple of years now, it has proven to be very handy for me.
I have not used the nanocom, so I can't comment on that one.
I only need it every so often, but it's a very handy thing to have when you do need to see what's going on.
The faultmate is very easy to use, just the set up was a bit fiddly with licencing and modules, but once you get past that, it's a snap to hook up in stand alone mode and read/ clear any fault codes.
It has brought a few faults to my attention that I would have never known about otherwise.
I would recommend owning one if you like to do your own maintenence, or even if you just like to know what's going on with your P38 before taking it to a mechanic.
Cheers, Pete.

I second that... bought one through Hardy back in 2007. software updates are free. All modules for every vehicle are in the 'black box' ...the relevant licence unlocks specific ones for your particular vehicle VIN... so if you update/change LRs, "BBS Colin" will, for a fee, provide new codes which you download and you're "on your way", so to speak ...

There is discount through this forum too.
Beware the conditions of the discount... think it is documented over in the Diagnostics forum.
Conditions to qualify for the discount were along the lines of:
- being your first purchase from BBS
- being a paid member of the forum
- having posted more than 50 posts or being a member for more than a year
... something like that, don't remember exactly. Being a member of the forum didn't automatically entitle you to a discount.
Not being a grinch, just wanting to manage expectations :)
Cheers, Paul.

Given it's quite a generous discount, I can't blame BBS for making sure it is genuine members who get access to it. As soon as I have saved up my pennies, I shall be calling....!
