View Full Version : Clogged fuel tank cap on Puma

My fuel tank cap vent became plugged while up bush yesterday, causing power loss. I got home OK by stopping regularly to loosen the cap briefly. I tried a bit of compressed air back through the 4 inside vents. But it didn't make much difference.

I'll buy another cap to replace it, but it would be handy to know if anyone has dismantled the cap to clean it. Or soaked it in degreaser, detergent or other to clean it up. I was in a reasonably remote area, when it happened, so it would be good to be able to know how to clean it up in the field.

Any ideas?

Cheers

Brid,

Tell more mate...! Would have taken some effort to get the fuel cap clogged?

Cheers,

Lou

I thought the fuel tank had a seperate breather that exits under left hand rear mud gaurd some where. Might be worth a check. I extended mine to under the bonnet with diff breathers (yet to extend transmission breather)

Brid, get another fuel cap under warranty. Mind seized, then fell apart on a long dusty trip to Alice last year. Washing in Kero or Diesel works for a brief period of time.
There is also a small filter looking device on a tube coming out of the tank. It's on top of the tank, about 100mm up on a tube with a curve at the end. On the drivers side about half way to centre of tank. This breather is a two way set up that appears to get blocked easily. The fix, after a new one, is extend it's open end's length to somewhere away from under the car. On a 130 places are easy, but a 110 I'd say anywhere else but inside.

A defendoor might help to prevent the problem in the future too....

Thanks fellas
I did relocate the tank breather tube and valve very early in its life as I was getting water in the fuel sediments. It's tucked up inside the rear of the cargo area trim.

I was able to dismantle the cap yesterday to the point where I could clean it up, so I won't bother replacing it. I think there might be a small shrowd inside the cap and above the 4 breather holes. It vents to the outside around the lock barrel. Just accumulation of dust over time I guess.

I'll check out the tank vent valve as well on the weekend & maybe replace it with a little inline fuel filter.

Those little Defendoors do look a good idea, Scallops.
