View Full Version : Used Deefer pricing

I currently own a D4 which I love to bits. Previously I had a 3-door D1, the vehicle which got me into Land Rovers.
I've decided I want a Deefer as a second vehicle. I'd like to set it up as a tourer and I'm thinking 130 HCPU, ideally 300 TDi as that's about where my budget is (~10k).
This budget seems reasonable according to both Redbook and Glasses Guide. However, I am seeing 20 year old defenders with >200,000km asking $22,000 and more.
I realise that as a general rule most of the vehicles one finds when searching on carsales are overpriced (otherwise they're gone in under a week for popular models) however I'm seeing similar pricing (though not quite as severe) on Gumtree.
Am I missing something here?
Ideally I would be able to find a 130 Twin Cab HCPU with <=250,000km and a full service history for circa $10k. Bonus points for one owner from new and/or from an LR enthusiast (and thus likely looked after).

you will be lucky to find a 300tdi for 10k with kms under 300k the odd one pops up but they are quite hard to find and normally snapped up quick or have something major wrong with them or not where you are

What should I reasonably expect to pay for a good condition mid to late 90's 130 HCPU TDi with ~200,000km, located in or around greater Sydney area?

I can do that at a stretch. Problem is the best I've found is $22,500 in Coffs...

A 130 is not really a city run around
Be prepared to drive for her!
7 years ago I bought my 130 from a farmer near Moruya (I was in Cairns at the time)
11k from memory - it had been ex-forestry then a farm hack for many years.
Rolled a couple of times, engine was dusted... you know a project!
But at that stage, ones with a service history and good condition were $25k plus.
I think if you really want a good one (remember mid nineties is now nearly 20 years old) you will have to be patient, travel for it and most likely stump up.
Having said that, they are a simple thing to work on, just buy a donga and spend some $ on it to get it up to speed.

I paid $15000 for my 130 DC over 10 years ago, guess it has held its value then. The high price is good for those of us who already have one. Once you get one it'll be good for you too.:D

I was too slow yesterday on a one owner 1995 130 dual cab with around 200k that was on carsales in Devenport for $7k. I didn't see it in the flesh, but looked to be a bargain for that money. Good luck to whoever snapped it up.

There are cheap defenders around but be prepared to spend big to get them right. I always have a little chuckle when I read about folks buying a cheapy knowing as I do (learnt the hard way) what will be wrong with them and what it will cost to fix. I think some new owners are caught up in the romance of the defender and dont see the worn out pile of poo they bought for what it is.
Worn out ones clunk and bang and leak and whine and are pigs to drive. Get them right and most of those issues disappear, so they just clunk and leak a little...
I'd either spend good dollars and buy what is obviously a good, well maintained example, or I'd get the straightest cheapy I could find and build it up. Lots of fun...but expensive. You do end up with a very capable and unique vehicle though.

Around NSW I would expect that you wouldn't expect any change out of $15K for anything that was passable. And I would think that there wouldn't be too many Tdis' running around with under 200K on the clock that are up for sale.As a general rule of thumb,I expect to have to outlay at least 33% of purchase price on any second hand vehicle that I purchase,to get it to a condition that I am happy with. This rule has worked well for me over many years, unless I get carried away with the mods, and then the sky is the limit.

It's not just in Australia Defenders are expensive, the general rule of thumb in UK before I left was a Defender was double the price of a similar age Disco, the crazy thing is there's no shortage of Defenders there.

Yep,I had a conversation with Gwyn Lewis a month or so ago,and he was telling me that the price of Defenders had gone through the roof for anything that wasn't rusted out,and that Discos were a dime a dozen over there.Looks like people the world over are starting to see the light:DAnd realising that Jap trucks aren't necessarily all they are made out to be and that Defenders represent the true utilitarian 4wd ;)

I took a new 110 for a whirl this morning at my local dealer and was impressed. Assuming a new 130 has similar road manners I might just go new. Of course that blows the budget utterly out of the water :/
I'll have to find a 300tdi to compare against first.

The difference is like chalk and cheese tbh, the Puma is leagues ahead but you pay for it, think the TD5 sits nicely between the two ;)

Bite the bullet and buy a puma. At least you have something to sell in a couple of years

No matter which model you buy you'll have something to sell in future, just one will be worth less than you paid for it, the other you may lose what you spent on it.

Yep, that's why I ended up buying an 8 month old Puma 90, even though it was more expensive to buy, I just thought it was better value in the long run.

it really depends where you are going to be travelling what you want to do to it, will you do it yourself or get someone else to.
each model has advantages and disadvantages over the other

The way I see it the second hand car market in Australia is a rip-off! You can pick up Defenders in the UK a dime a dozen, ok they'll be a bit more rusty with the salt they put on the roads in winter but seriously! $15000 for a mid nineties defender! And its not just Landies its everything.
I looked at importing a purchase from the UK and with the shipping cost it was still several thousand dollars cheaper than buying one here but the problem is all the tax you have to pay for it when it gets here leaves it at about the same as buying one here.
I reckon you could buy the parts brand new piece by piece from the UK and build it yourself and it would be cheaper! lol

From about 1984 till the present models of Landie / Defender has just been a slow evolution, no MAJOR changes. The older they are the more agricultural, slow and noisy they are. The newer they are the less rugged and field repairable. Just a matter of choosing the attributes you prefer.

Both my defenders were bought new because of the very strong second hand value,it won't matter which one you buy you'll never loose out,I'd buy new or ex demo if you can find one. Pat

I just bought a 1995 130 with 284k on the clock, bull bar and maxi drive rear locker. Flew to Canberra to pick it up and drove it 8 hours home. Been looking for two years. Bought this one within 3 days of it being listed on Gumtree to make sure I didn't miss out again. Paid 15k for it. Body is rough but it runs well and doesn't leak oil for now.

Sold my 110 300tdi for 5k. Needed a new clutch. Otherwise in great nick. ARB bar and racks, <200k, still see it getting around Newie as it has my custom plates on it. I now realise I offloaded it a bit cheap... I have a TD5 that may become superfluous when the new D4 arrives in a week or two. :D

I bought a stock 2005 110 Td5 for 27k with 78000km on it. Was in immaculate condition, with one careful owner. Not a spec of dust in it. I was looking for a 130 as well but hard to find a decent example that doesn't cost the earth. But am very happy with the 110, and its a good excuse to get a new trailer:D

I am usually only stupid once....
At the time I was happy to part with it and get my first disco, it was going to cost me a bit for the clutch re-fit.
