IMHO horse****!
They have just got a big bonus. You go on any of the major suppliers, put in your address and it automatically drops VAT. Have a look at a few ebay uk sites as well as paddocks, ashcroft and mm.

Have you asked them to refund the VAT via paypal?
You could always leave negative feedback and notify ebay...
UK companies do not have to pay VAT to non EU customers. He has effectively chaged you 15% more for your item.
Next time, confirm in an email that it is non VAT before you buy...:)

Buying overseas can be a lot cheaper at times, but you have to check, check and double check, and still be prepared to get the occasional dodgy item. The UK normally rip us off with freight charges anyway!

Hate to tell you this but the UK VAT rate is 20% now https://www.gov.uk/vat-rates and anything outside the EU is VAT free,
as the boys above have said, the seller has netted a 20% increase in profit.

I wouldn't buy it and look elsewhere. Just a rip off.

We are exempt from VAT as are they through the transaction, so it's just a tax free commision for them.

if your payment hasn't gone through yet, do a reversal and look elsewhere

Isn't there a way that if you get charged vat for an item if you take a receipt you can claim it back here??? There is a office at the airport for it I'm sure there is how ever not sure eBay applies as no one seems to take eBay receipts seriously.

I would lodge a dispute. And infuture ask the supplie if vat will be deducted

If it's a small trader, they may not even be charging VAT anyway as your business has to have a turnover above a certain threshold before they charge VAT.

If they are VAT registered, they should be charging VAT (for domestic customers) and displaying their VAT registration number... Which you can then check on-line that it's valid.

If you want to get into details, ping me a message as I run a VAT registered Ltd company.

It doesn't matter one bit how or where they advertise their goods for sale, what matters is that are exporting the goods directly to a non EU address.

How was the item shipped to you? Royal Mail or Courier? From either method they will have the evidence they need to show that they are able zero rate the supply (not charge 20% VAT).

You can make a complaint to the HM Customs and Revenue office if you have their VAT number.

Last year I bought something from +++ and when I checked the invoice I had been charged VAT, I called the company and asked if they were VAT registered , they said yes, I said they had charged me VAT on a non Euro export.

Of course we have , they said we only ever knock the VAT off if you ask us to.
Never went back to them either...

many of my purchases from the UK have included vat in the purchase price and it is then refunded back to me through paypal, if your unsure you should contact the seller prior to purchase[if they dont reply they dont deserve your bussiness] and always use paypal.

Get the reciept and send it to HM Customs and Revenue for them to query and investigate why a UK company is including VAT on export:D

Hi AM , many year ago when I had a business in the uk . Once you get to a point in turnover then you have to become VAT reg. Your VAT no.. has to go no all your stationary . The VAT charged is passed on to (customs and excise). not the Inland Revenue , as already said it does not apply to export items , you should not have been charged . jimr1 ..

Just remember that you can only claim the VAT back if you were actually charged for it in the first place... Some small suppliers don't charge VAT.

It's no different to here.

Here, I think the threshold is $50,000 ? (It may be higher now)

SWMBO's small business can't claim back GST and so you can't claim back the GST if you user her services. (if you are a GST registered business)
My mower/chainsaw bloke is the same, so I can't claim back any GST if I buy something from him that I buy for work, and my yoga mate who I work with is in the same boat.

When we bought a big shipment of yoga props a month ago I ordered it all using my ABN as I can claim back the GST.
My other business turns over much more than the threshold and so I need to submit a GST return every quarter and pay the tax man his cut. My ABN covers both of my businesses and then I invoiced Tess for her half of the gear.
If we'd done it the other way around using her business name and ABN I couldn't claim any of the GST back, even though I'm registered to do so and can claim the GST as a business input.

Well,... I just ordered £75 from a UK store. The price as advised by their website included VAT at 20%. Therefore my credit card should have said £62.50. I have also emailed them to request VAT not be charged which they acknowledged they would not charge. Looks like one hand is not talking to the other in this particular store.

I now have go on the expedition to get it back. I'll let you know how it pans out.

Andrew

Update: Receiving a refund on the items but not on the postage (at this stage)

Postage should also be VAT free but does look like a involved process. (Notice 744B ).
