I know this subject has been done to death in one form or another.
My folks D4 19in wranglers are almost due for replacement. The use their D4 only on the black top and for towing their caravan.

Can anyone suggest good tyres for majority on road use?

Cheers,
Craig

I would suggest the following even though they are AT's:

1. GG AT's - quiet & significantly cheaper than OEM's (have them on mine).
2. Cooper Zeon LTZ's

Gravel road performance is significantly better.

I have no complaints with my GG AT's - good on road, both wet & dry.

Seem to be wearing well.

I would avoid Scorpion ATRs as they wear easily on the edge and the tread depth is less than the main secion on the tyre making them look worn before their time

I have them and will never put them back on

Going to agree with Garry here which is a shame as when new there are no better tyre. Mine have lasted 50k and the fronts are right on the limit now.

Hi All,

My Disco 4 is due for delivery around early May but I am looking to hang on to the original Goodyears and rims, buy the GOE 18" rims and shod them with Bridgestone Dueller D697 LT265/60/18's. Has anyone had experience with these?

My vote would go to the Cooper Zeon LTZ's - had them for 40000 Km's and thought they were great!

Have recently upgraded to Cooper ST MAXX for a bit extra grip in the slop, but they aren't as good on road and are a lot noisier - still like them though.

I have the LTZ's in 285/60-18 and very impressed. Strong side walls. Have given them an hammering since picking up my GOE rims.....but use factory tyres during the break between trips.

I have GG AT 255/55 19", my experience has been that they're great tyres on and off road so far as handling and grip goes. Very confidence inspiring on wet/slippery roads. Haven't had any punctures offroad but have carved a few bits off them here and there, nothing serious, but noticable and slightly concerning. My biggest objection to them is that they are obnoxiously noisy at 90kmh, they make a bit of noise at other speeds which is tolerable but at 90 they drive me nuts (a little harsh maybe, but I do 90 a lot ... ). They annoy me so much that I am going to change them to other tyres well before they're worn out.

I'm tossing up between getting a set of 18"s and Duelers or keeping the 19"s and getting Pirelli ATR's. I've had Scorpion Zeros in the past so poor wear from Pirelli doesn't surprise me, but ATR's seem well regarded as far as their manners, quietness and durability goes.

Any other shared wisdom would be appreciated.

I have a set (tyres that is, not the rims) on my RRS, love 'em.
Good on dry road, slight hum but nothing the radio can't deal with.
Had the first rain in Melbourne for about 3 months yesterday & they performed very well on the wet and greasy roads.
Had a play after work in the grave digger's clay pile  very wet & slippy, but never lost forward momentum. Obviously they're no mud terrain but I'm impressed so far.
Also they're an LT, so strong in the sidewall too.
Cheers.

Just got a set of Bridgestone D697's put on today. The bloke that owned the Bridgestone dealership just happened to own a 2007 D3 and was waiting delivery on a new D4. The D3 he owned was shod with you guessed it Bridgestone D697 265 60 18. He told me that they have fineally made a propper 4x4 tyre for the discovery and said l wouldnt be disappointed with them as he had used this tyre on many trips where he was very impressed. I had Cooper discovery ATR 165 60 18's on previous and found them to wear out very quickly. 50000klms for 5 tyres not good. The Coopers have a load index of 109 which is the lowest load rateing you can have. The new bridgestones have a load index of 114 which is higher than the range for this vehicle. So should get plenty of k' s out of these Bridgestone's. Going away next week so i will see how they preform

My question is when changing tyres you really need to also change the spare even, as mine is, if it is brand new still? Do others keep an odd spare? Does the slight size difference matter assuming you repair / replace the damaged one asap. Of course, this is not for trans-Australia crossings.

Do others rotate their spare with the driven wheels to extend overall tyre life?

Thanks

If the tyre size is the same you can retain the spare. A tyre has a life also tyres are designed to be used within a period of time. As a tyre ages the tyre compound becomes harder with age so you start to have less grip in wet situations and less grip in cornering etc. If i have 5 tyres of the same size and patern then i rotate every 10000klm. If the spare is different i only rotate the 4 in use. You must not have two different tyres on the front as they have different compounds and different breaking distances, so you could get yourself into quite a bit of trouble in an emergency

I ordered a set of D697 265/60/18s yesterday. Bridgestone have a stock clearance sale on the 265 & 285s but I think it ends today (28-Feb-13). $399 ea fitted. Dealers who did not know about the sale were quoting low -mid $400s.

Also going to fit the Inawise 4x4 TPMS unit while the tyres are off.

Thats not a "special" price @ $399

I paid $340 a tyre in Whyalla - Not suburbia :)

I couldn't agree more Epic.. My GG ATs drove me mad until I swapped them with DoctorJ's Wranglers. He eventually wrecked them up in the high country and has now something more durable .I didn't really need ATs as I have a second set of 17" BFG MTs for off roading..don't know what I'll get when the Wranglers wear out. I'll only need a road tyre.

Paid $370 for mine in Melbourne:eek: Bob Janes' price guarantee, Bridgestone was $380. (all inclusive, balance, old tyre disposal, gst.)

Maybe they get cheaper as you get further out?!?
$399 does seem expensive.

Paid $345 fitted balanced and new stems from Bridgestone. Another Bridgestone tyre ce.ntre quoted $405. Most tyre centres I contacted prices ranged from $440 Bob Jane to $345 Bridgestone so shop around.

GG Ats are only $270 a big difference for five tyres.;)

GG ATs have:

Softer sidewalls (known to fail or get staked easily)
Much louder after a bit of wear
Thinner rubber carcass

Not exactly apples for apples... :)

Still a reasonable tyre, but not LT construction nor are they anywhere near as tough as the D697

IThe use their D4 only on the black top and for towing their caravan.

GGs maybe not up to your use but more than fit for this purpose.
Sidewalls are thin but only ever had a nail puncture on mine. But evert time I went to the Oberon plateau i got stone punctures in my OEM Wranglers.

I had some Cooper HTs on mine for while and proved pretty punture proof.

Hi Craig,

For what it's worth I had Toyo Open Country H/T's on my previous D4 albiet 18'' and they do make a 19".

I'd done about 25K and down to 8mm tread so they looked like they would go a reasonable distance. I'm predominantely road and camper trailer.

Cheers,
John
