Hi all

A few days back our 2005 Diesel manual Golf developed a noise in 3rd gear. Sound like the same noise you would get if you put a bit of cardboard into the spoke of a spinning bicycle wheel.

The noise is only in 3rd gear and is constant. Throttle on / off still there, change up or down a gear is gone?? Seems to be a little bit louder on deceleration?

Vehicle is a 2005 model and has been treated gently, serviced regular and has done 94,000 klm.

VW has it at the moment & we are waiting for a diagnosis.

Any one know of any issues with this model Golf or manual Golf's ??

Do you know the gearbox model? 6 speed or 5?

Hi
It is a 6 speed, The have had it on the hoist and think it might be a chipped gear. We are now waiting for the quote to remove the gear box and do further inspections.

Thinking this may get expensive?

If you get a quote that you need to take few deep breaths after receiving, it might be worth just importing a recon box from Europe. About $800 delivered.

Thanks sheerluck in hindsight your advice would have worked a whole lot better than the way things have turned out, The cost for the repairs has gone through the roof.

The repairs to the box around $3800.00, The might as well do the clutch while the box is out an extra $1500.00. The 2 week wait for a part from Germany before any repairs can be done will leave us without a vehicle for the best part of March.

VW do not give a s##t. They reckon that the failure is due to driver error or low gear box oil levels. We have serviced the Golf at a VW dealer from new it has never missed a service.

The service records all state all oil levels have been checked and were fine?

I have requested the broken bits to be returned with the repaired vehicle, hopefully an inspection will show wear due to high temp from low oil levels.

VW has sent the vehicle to a gear box specialist, Frustrating thing is we could have done that ourselves. Wonder who they are using, Trans diff? Anyone know?

We are both really irritated as to the driver abuse theory, Both of us have owned manual cars for 30+ years. Even in my younger days never damaged a gear box.

VW replaced a battery last service, $300.00, Battery was described as failed Battery has been running the caravan for the last 12 months and works as it should. After 8 months sitting in the van it happily jump started the TD5 when I left the interior light on all night.

I would suggest any one that is getting a service from any dealers to take the time to check the work has actually been done! A small mark on the air filter, pollen filter, gearbox fill point, diff fill point, trans case fill point etc.

If we had done this we may well have saved a lot of $$

ANY ONE RECOMMEND A VW MECHANIC ON THE WEST SIDE OF MELBOURNE???

Interesting to read.
I have a 6sp tdi skoda, evolution of the same box I think. Any clutch/flywheel parts needed I will be importing from Europe. The cost savings are massive.

I bought another euro car for this reason, I was completely over the prices charged for japanese parts with part numbers that don't cross-over to the same vehicles sold in the rest of the world.
