Wanting to get myself an iPad eventually.
A question on iCloud storage. Am I correct in thinking that I can get a smaller capacity iPad but then buy extra storage in the cloud. Biggest user for me is movies, tv shows and photo's.
Does accessing the cloud use up your data allowance ? I assume it does, and in the case of retrieval of movies it would chew up a lot.
Thanks
Kenley

Sounds right to me. Just check the prices. Apple are not the market to lose money

Would also think so as you are downloading from iCloud.
I have two iPad 3s (one with the sim option and one without but both 64Gb). I have never needed to use the sim as I have mobile broadband. Mobile broadband is not cheap but definitely handy. Go on holidays, take it with you.

For your intended usage iCloud would be fine.
For me the iCloud service is limited in the type of data it holds as it won't allow me to store office documents etc. I use an alternative called Dropbox which allows me to alccess all all my files not just photos, e-mails, music and movies.
If you are doing any travelling getting an ipad with the sim card (3g/4g) option is well worth while as it has an inbuilt GPS. You can still use/connect to other mobile broad band options to save money if necessary

Don't use the cloud for backing up movies, tv shows etc, you are correct it will chew up your data.

I was just about to say the same.

Even photos can kill you. A client went overseas and took a lot of photos not knowing his ipad was automatically backing up to icloud and came back to a $5000 phone bill. They let him off a lot of it but who needs the hassle?

Cloud storage is only good for those selling it. It is not secure enough and data charges will kill you.

Thanks for confirming all that. For the extra$110 or so to go from 32 to 64 gig it's not worth the cloud expense and potential huge expense.
Thanks again

Forgot about the volume of data there as I was just thinking about file types:oops2::oops2::oops2:. So I stand corrected. The free 5gb won't go far with pics, movie etc.

Easer to just tether your iPad to your phone and use your mobile phones Internet connection on your iPad.

Not in my case. I have a work BlackBerry, not a personnel mobile phone. (I could still do it but this would not be the right thing to do). Alternatively, my neighbour is giving away his wi-fi and has been doing so for the last 8 months, I also don't use this.
Mobile broadband is miles in front of the mobile phone in my opinion. The modem is smaller than the BlackBerry so not a hassle to carry around. It's roughly 80% of the size of the phone.
Also I don't have to worry about excessive downloads. At the moment (and for the next 5 years, by choice) I'm in transit with work and when you relocate house you don't have to worry about reconnections etc.

It's on the list of things to do but I just haven't got around to it. (in fact I will do it this weekend, and probably show him how to lock it).
If you asking "don't you speak to your neighbours". The answer is "hardly ever" as I'm currently living in Rockhampton and I have found it to be a very antisocial place (compared to Brisbane). Sad I know, I thought it would have been the opposite for a large country town. I didn't think I would be saying this but I'm looking forward to leaving Rockhampton.
Looking forward to next place though (Darwin, NT). I've heard it’s quite the opposite.

Andrew
