hi I bought my 1993 disco the friday before christmas, the guy i got it off had put a new water pump in it had nice clean water in it everything looked gud, on the way home it was noted that the temp gauge went up to three quarters immediately and a red light started flashing so i rang him up, he said the sender was faulty and i shudnt worry, yeah rite, local Landy dealer sed it needed a new rad so did the rad specialist both wanted over $700 just for a new rad plus fitting, ouch! by this time i had already bought a new thermostat, one that had 20% more flow, cos the old owner was old skool and in his seventies so i thort he may have removed the old one(my dad liked doing this) he hadnt as it turned out, but the new one fixed the problem, the dealer told me that the gauge shud have the needle on half way with it going its own width further under load, which it now does, the thing is ,i went to check the oil after I had been out in it, and the dipstick was so hot it burned my fingers, my question is, is this normal? i am thinking of adding another smaller rad into the system to increase the cooling,i am looking at a td5 intercooler and mounting it on the return side of the rad so that it cools already cooler water,I dont need to be told that I was silly for checking it hot by the way, but when the minister for war says check it ,I check it, duz any body think it not a gud idea to add the extra cooling ,just adding its a V8 and the rad is perfect the extra cooling is insurance for the future, rad was flushed thru twice and reverse flushed last of all and given the thumbs up by the mechanic who put the thermostat in

Tdi right?
The cooling system works very well as standard so long as it is in good shape. You dont need to add an extra rad. You have already done the thermostat and water pump so to complete a full service you could flush out the cooling system, put in a new radiator, get a vdo temp guage and matched sender for more accurate temperature readings - and a low coolant alarm. Get a compression test done and be mindful of head gasket and timing belt replacement.

So you still haven't fixed the radiator? It only needs ONE GOOD radiator. It may need only to be cleaned out at a radiator shop for $110 or so.

everything Manic said PLUS if it has not been done already replace the plastic plugs in the radiator and thermostat housing with brass ones like these from member juddy: Land Rover Defender/Discovery Radiator Brass Plug set x2 | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Land-Rover-Defender-Discovery-Radiator-Brass-Plug-set-x2-/321067295721?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4ac11a23e9)
