I discovered this 'red shirt thing' a few times unconsciously or naively. It works though.

I spend a lot of time in the wilderness, and when deciding on a colour of a GoreTex jacket have been known to choose a bright colour for this very reason. I never realised the phenomenon had a name.

Its effective for sure. Nature backgrounds are commonly green (eg trees) and therefore a foreground/subject with plenty of red goes off snap crackle pop.

If you went to a V8 supercars event (hello to all you Holden fans out there) you'd need to do it in reverse, find a green shirt to stand out from all the red:p

It was a spectacular mountain, but cold there. An hour later when we were in full sun our thermometer started moving above the -35C which was as low as it could measure! Not pleasant getting dressed in a tent.
