Just times out. So I try to access paypal website direct. Same problem..can't connect. Is paypal down or am I doing something wrong as in settings etc. Jim :)

So w. Defender is ok?
Suffice to say... Norton and any Symantec product is NOT ok.. :D
Norton software is about as reliable as the Motorcycles of the same name.
Chew up resources and cause issues...
Ditch it :)

microsoft security essentials is built in to windows 8
unless you are doing something out of the ordinary it is sufficient.

I have 3 computers. One old laptop running XP. A second new laptop running Windows 7, and a new desktop running Windows 8. I cannot connect to paypal from any of these computers. What is going on as I need this connection urgently. What can block 3 computers which until yesterday or the day before had no problem with paypal. I can access anywhere else just not paypal. Could my wireless router cause this? If so, how? Jim :mad::mad::mad:

Just remembered I had paypal crash on me in January. I hit the "forgotten your password?" button and reset my password. Been fine since. Maybe they got hacked and are keeping it quiet?

I was told you have to uninstall Defender to be able to have Microsoft Security Essentials work properly - apparently there are incompatabilities. That was when MSE was introduced. The same goes for running other stuff often downloaded without you knowing with other software (McAfee, Norton, etc). They end up fighting each other which leads, as they say nicely, to other vulnerabilities.
This is not a Microsoft plug but why would you use any of these third-party antivirus, etc scanners when MS employ literally thousands of staff to try and keep on top of hackers and MSE is their own free one.

Under Win7, when you install Security Essentials it disables Defender automatically. You don't have to do anything about Defender to have Security Essentials running properly.

My previous PC was running Norton 2003 (I think) over XP. MS introduced Defender and I installed it. When MSE was introduced my nephew was at MS in Seattle and told me to uninstall everything else, including Defender. MSE was a bit of a hog at first on the PC but seemed to do the job faster as it developed.
MSE is now on my Windows 7 laptop, has picked up a couple of Trojans in 12 months and seems all good.

Yep. Depreciate all user accounts to user, not administrator privileges, and run MSE. Shouldn't have a problem at all.
