Guys
I am in a situation as what I should do.
I had a 2010 110 puma from new which is no longer with us anymore  I have been thinking about what I should do, buy a 2.4 130 which seems to be a mission finding a reasonable one or go a new one again and see how the 2.2 puma is. Just to add, my 2.4 copped a fair bit of a workout with 90,000k's in 2 years which there was not 1 day it did not hit the limiter  and never missed a beat..
I have heard mixed reports about them for a few reasons but would like to hear what others have to say ?

I would have thought that considering it is virtually the same motor, the performance and reliability would be pretty much the same.
Transit vans, Ford Rangers and Mazda BT 50's all seem to be going okay and they all use versions of the 2.2.
2.4 v 2.2 is only 50cc per cylinder, SFA really.

I am fairly sure that AUS models do not have the dreaded DPF.......
I agree, why not go for the 2.2L

I went from a 2.4 my09 to a new one a few weeks ago. The new 2.2 is a much nicer engine to drive and live with. So much smoother and less noisey. There seem to be quite a few changes to the engine, a silent and water cooled egr for example.

I'm fairly sure they do. There's a blinkin' big shiny "thing" in the exhaust system just after the turbo that looks awfully like a DPF and there's a dash light to tell you that it needs regenerating - orange for warning and red for "do it now". Then there's the owners manual explaining it and the dealer telling me about it. Having said all that, maybe you're correct and the AUS models don't get the "dreaded" version, just the version that works fine and causes no issues if you don't muck with it and drive the car properly?

I'd be interested in getting rid of everything emissions related ... Laws are there to be broken :D
I didn't notice any power loss between the 2.4 & 2.2 really I must say

Definitely the 2.2 - much smoother, quieter and now BAS have cracked the ECU and remaps are available. This means you can ask for the South African map which does not have the DPF :)

Was just quoted $61,000 for cab chassis :o there's less extras on them than my 110 which had snorkel, sidesteps, towbar, traction control,ABS and bullbar that came to $54,000 must be extra for supply and demand...

Had 2, 2.4 pumas, and just picked up 2 weeks ago brand spanky 2.2 130 hcpu, not sure if it's the fact that it's lighter or what but it seems to crap all over the 2.4 for drivability and performance, havnt put all of my work stuff on it yet which will bring it up to around the 3 ton mark, also getting good economy out of a very tight engine...maybe it's just the silly price I bought it for that puts a smile on my face..:D

Hmmm interesting...I havnt heard any bad reports yet about the 2.2...I was expecting an explosion of comments like I would of if I had posted zd30 and the word reliability in the one sentence but I have not...little problems with emission system will be a given as my 2.4 had a failed egr at 60,000 but what I was expecting when suggesting the 2.2 was head, block or turbo failures etc etc but does not seem the case...I suppose the td5 was bagged out by many when it first came out but now has respect amongst most...
Pat I will have to agree I have not pushed them on pricing yet

Hi there
We have had Hector (MY2012 HCPU) since August. I fretted lots before committing to the new 2.2 lump -mainly because of what people were writing on forums like this. So far, all the predictions of doom and gloom remain unfulfilled.
I find the 2.2 an excellent unit. Hector is a working truck and spends lots of time offroad grinding through the mud and up and down hillsides hauling heavy loads. Exactly the kind of work that killed our old Toyota.
I have never owned a 2.4 TDCi, but compared to the older Defenders and Series Land Rovers I have driven, the 2.2 is a dream. I have never even noticed the DPF other than the light on the dash at start up.
Never been effected by the notorious turbo hose issue, perhaps they corrected it after the very first batch. So a big thumbs up for the 2.2 from somebody who works it hard in the bush!
Cheers
Alan

Thanks for that...seems as though your happy enough with the new 2.2 then...my 2.4 also had a fair workout compared to most with a mix of on and offroad driving pushing it to its limits which in the long run I regeted due to component failures however the 2.4 never missed a beat sounds as though the 2.2 is the same so far..
I drove a 2.2 and it did seem a little bit more responsive than the 2.4

At times you'd think AULRO was Overlander or 4WD waction the way non owners bag modern defenders,it good to hear that actual owners are more than satisfied with their performance. Pat

what is the issue with the DPF?

As Alan said, I have never seen the DPF light come either, only on igintion on. I love my truck and except for the turbo hose coming loose and the hose clamp rubbing on the hose next to it, it's been great. The way I look at it, "**** Happens" and as my neighbour has a new VW Jetta and has been back 3 times for a dodgey alternator only returning 9v to the battery(took them that long to agree to replace it) I dont think it matters what brand of car it is, they all play up occasionally, with the level of technology in them these days it's inevitable. Just do it, you know you want to!;)

Yeah I agree...
I bag them out for numerous reasons as I tell my mates "I'm allowed to do as much bagging as possible is I own them" I have no problems with pointing out faults with stuff I own...owning new and old rovers my opinion is there driveline has got better but worse at same time ie:moved onto a 6speed but removed the sals rear diff..I cannot really complain about the new defenders interior as I find it fancy however "4wd action do not think so" I find the defenders Handel better than a cruiser or patrol with a more nibble on/off road feeling.
I cannot complain about the dreaded "transit" motor like outsiders do I've gave it hell and no problems...I was expecting the 2.2 to be a zd30 from what I was hearing

I've only test driven the 2.2 in a D90 yet but it seemed smooth, quiet and pretty refined to me. A little on the labouring side... but that might be cause it was a brand new car - still not warn in.
I have an 07 Ranger with the 3.0L Duratech TDI in it (92000 km). very smooth engine with great power. I've had no real issues with it apart from a oil hose dying - which isn't really an engine issue... just a wear and tear thing as far as i'm concerned. My Ranger is ex-council, they have hundreds of them here and if they can stand up to some random driver beating the living daylights out of it for 3 years then they must be an ok engine. I think that the 3L ranger engine is a "square" stroke (is that the right term? the bore is the same as the stroke....) whereas the 2.2 is a longer stroke so that should make it better IMO.

what is the issue with the DPF?
Nothing at all except the Isuzu 110's didn't have one so they must be bad;). Pat

a problem with some DPF's is they clean themselves (run very hot, they inject fuel near or after TDC?? ) when and where they see fit,,
like long grass,,
I am not sure how LR have theirs set up.
