The Oxford and Cambridge Far Eastern Expedition was a 1955 journey undertaken by six Oxford & Cambridge university students in two Land Rover Series I Station Wagons from London to Singapore and back. The expedition was primarily sponsored by Land Rover, who provided the vehicles, but was also sponsored by a total of more than 80 other third parties through both loaned and gifted equipment and supplies, ranging from whiskey to collapsible buckets, as well as monetary donations. The expedition was both filmed and documented, and the footage broadcast in the mid-50s on the BBC, which gave it the film in the first place at the behest of Sir David Attenborough. A book recounting the expedition, entitled First Overland, was written by Tim Slessor two years after the historic journey, and the expedition has been frequently referred to as the First Overland ever since. The expedition, its account, and the accompanying film footage are historically significant, as they not only recount the first such journey of this type by vehicle, but also provide the last recorded vehicular journey along the Ledo Road from India into Burma, as shortly afterwards the border between the two countries was closed.

The vehicle is 1949 chassis no L8664376 and dispatched to Development Engineer Arthur Goddard on 11th April 1949. The photo is taken outside Block 1 at Solihull on the west side of the canteen. This vehicle is one in Arthur's engineering fleet and was used for testing the wide front springs layout. They had a huge number of vehicles at this point, testing new ideas that were ultimately for the 86 and 107. A few ideas made it to the 80" like the wide front springs. Yes pre pro hard top is very early too.

You should be carrying a suitable jack - in which case jack up the back of the vehicle and fill in the holes. If necessary unload.

Truck drivers across the nullarbor and other tracks used to get bogged all the time before bitumen. Usual practice was just to camp beside the vehicle until the ground dried out enough to keep going.

Early 1948 Model - no holes for tow attachment in centre of rear chassis crossmember, no rope loops on tailgate or rear corner cappings, angle rib in centre of tailgate..................and very interesting also in that it has an obvious glossy finish paint. The usual interpretation of the paint was that is was semi-gloss or semi-matt.

Yes, it's for (electric) cable pulling, looks like it also has hydraulic outlets at the front on the radiator support panel for powering other equipment. Some vehicles also had internal winches for cable laying.

Nothing much to look at, it belongs to the father of one of the trackers at a safari camp I occasionally frequent, and at first blush not beyond becoming roadworthy again (this is a relative concept in Africa). He bought it ages ago thinking to start a guiding operation of his own with it. However, here is the classic African dilemma - unlike Mgabe, Zuma and the rest, the guy simply has no money and is unlikely to find any at anytime too soon.

So, what happens next?

It owes him money, so likely as not it will get cut up to make a 'scotch cart' which is the back half pulled by 4 or so donkeys. And there goes another little piece of Land Rover history.........

That 1st pic of the S1 wagon is cool. It appears to have trafficaters, have seen them on early Rover cars :D but never on a Series.

Sorry - it is not a standard 107 wagon. It is a coachbuilt special for the British Post Office Engineering Department. Possibly as few as only one made, but may have been several.

Trafficators were optional equipment from the very start - some photographs of even preproduction cars have them. But they were not fitted there - they were fitted to the top of the windscreen pillars. I don't think I have ever seen them on a Landrover in Australia. One reason for this is that trafficators were never a legal substitute for hand signals in most (all?) Australian states. They were almost universal on English cars sold here in the 1940s and early 1950s, but were left off Landrovers, as they were only an option on them.

Generally correct with a few famous exceptions.

For example, King George VI was given a Series 1 88" by Rover (example of solid British engineering, and possibly solid English toadying) for tooling about Balmoral and, along with custom gun racks etc, it had trafficators fitted into the sides of the front mudguards just before where they joined the bulkhead. On the other hand, the freeby given to Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother had the trafficators fitted in the more usual position at the top sides of the windscreen frame.

Yes - one on a Series 2a in my "graveyard" here.

These were a common fitting on cars of all types from the 1950s into at least the seventies, and not uncommon back to the twenties.

They sort of faded out as speeds increased and fuel costs started to soar after 1973, and almost universal airconditioning saw the last of them, but you still occasionally see one.

My Dad had a sunshade on his County, but it was the later curved end style (to match the windscreen) rather than the folded style shown on the Series. Pretty sure you can still get the curved style from a truck place whose name escapes me.

The main clue is the mounts for the windscreen and are only found on the series 3 .
Next is as rangieman pointed out is the heater vent.
The wipers look to be the cable driven type by their placement, found on later 2A and S3.
Door hinges are a mixture of S2 and S3.
Large wheel nuts could be either late 2A or S3, can't tell which size stud though.
Grill and radiator support panel are series 2.
Bonnet was fitted as deluxe, to series 2A and series 3.

That's my list, see if anyone else can spot a difference?

Finally, this is a bit of a sad one - but the wreck itself is (in)famous:

A Mrs Ward and her young children were driving this Land Rover along a rural road early in the Rhodesian bush war (1973) when it hit a land mine - the first of many. Mrs Ward managed to pull her children safely from the wreck but died from her own wounds later on. The wreck was taken to a special engineering site and carefully examined to see what might be learned from it. It was subsequently spirited off to South Africa for further investigation and from that evolved a sequence of anti-mine vehicles including several variants based on Land Rover running gear and the better known Casspir and Buffel trucks that were used for the South African border war and exported all over Africa.
