View Full Version : Fitting electronic brake controller, wiring

Hi Forumites,
Looking to fit an electronic brake controller to my 2001 Defender, just wondering about access to the top of the brake pedal to get at the wiring.

Appears that the air con ducting has to come off for the best access I going to assume this isn't as daunting as it looks, are there any tricks to this so I don't accidentally break something. I'm assuming that the two radio speakers come out to give access to the two screws behind the panel, also assume that the cover comes off the centre fuse box, anything else? :confused:

Is it just easier to "patch into" the wires behind the fuse box, also looking to install a UHF radio, I was just going to find an accessory wire behind the centre fuse box unless somebody else has a better way or idea.

Another option is run two wires from the controller to the trailer plug. One sends the brake signal forward to the controller, the other from the controller to the trailer. You don't need to go near the brake pedal then!:thumbsup:

IIRC I went in from the engine side on the TDi and again, IIRC the pedal box is the same as the TD5 ?

Hi Mary, hope your keeping well.

I ditched the standard Warn controller in favour of an Albreit Solenoid, but not before removing the remote plug from the Warn controller.

The Albreit solenoid is much smaller and has a higher continuous current rating an is waterproof, that now lives in the battery box.

I have an isolator switch and an IN/OUT switch on the dash and the "salvaged" Warn remote plug mounted in the drivers front wing.

As for the P3, that came from a chap off eBay. The loom was nothing special really, but did make life more convenient. The hardest job was hiding / protecting the wire run down the chassis rail back to the trailer plug.

I temporarily mounted the P3 with some double sided foam sticky tape to the dashboard, just to the left of the steering wheel. That was over a year ago, it hasnt moved with the vibrations and corrugations, so I have left it there!!

In terms of which brake controller, I have pulled a horse float with several cars using the Redarc systems and in comparison the the progressive P3 they are rubbish.
