Truetrac-Difference between front and rear?

Hello all.
Ok, been looking to fit a Detroit in the rear and Trutrac in the front of my 130, but have picked up that some sellers are advertising a difference between the front and rear Trutrac.... Having owned one previously in an off roader, I can't see what difference there would be. Either way its driving, if loaded, the worm gears will still be forced out into the casing giving it it's 'load' and LSD effect... Thoughts please!

The difference between Front and rear Truetrac is the gears are the oposite way around. I put a rear truetrac into the front but had to pull apart and flip the gears around. Not that hard and there is a procedure on Disco Web.

I think the Detroit can go front or rear without mods but you don't want to do that in a constant 4WD car.

Often a different bias ratio is used front to rear.
Pretty sure Quaife are one that does that, not sure about Ashcroft's ATB.

a trutrack can go front or rear, yes internal gear orientation may need to be set, depending if unit is mounted in rear and needs to be moved to the front or vice versa..
a detroit locker is not reccomended upfront, due to it's nature it will cause steering issues in more ways than one, to include lack of turning, difficult in turning, binding of front end, loading of drive train all of these on a street vehicle.
for competiton vehicles, here in the us many drivers will use a spool at rear and a detroit upfront, it is not until the last 10 yrs or so that arbs have begun to show their head in competition.

Thanks for that guys, yeah, know all about Detroits in front axles. They were fitted in some Massy Ferguson tractors from new in the UK and called no spin diffs. They worked well but made the steering very heavy in soft dirt!

as mentioned Truetrac front and rear are different, & have different part numbers. I would not be pulling one apart to swap the gears around, the warranty will be voided. the carrier is final machined after assembly in the factory.

I was told this is perfectly ok to do by Keith (Rover Tracks) and Lucky 8 in the US. Lucky 8 sent me the wrong diff and said that flipping gears is the only difference and gave me the procedure. If buying new I would go for the right part but if a cheap one came up from the other end then go for it.

I have a true trac in the front of my county, came out of the rear of a disco and works great as is. Has your defender got a salsbury diff? If so that would be the reason for different part numbers. Also about halfway through 1994 deafers went to 24 spline on the diff end in the front. I converted my county. As for waiting for one to come up at a good price... you and every body else who knows how well they work! Including me as I have 2 county's and my Father is also looking. I got mine off of ebay, in sydney $450 with 20000kms on it, one bidder.

Yeah, mines a later 99 Td5, so assuming its 24 spline. Have made a purchase now, bought a Rear Detroit for the Salisbury and a Front Truetrac for the Rover diff straight out of the states from Lucky8. Both and the postage to Adelaide cost $1200 au. Thought that was pretty fair. Will let u know when they arrive! When I eventually build the front Salisbury I'll list the Truetrac on here. Could b a while tho!!!:)
