brand new VDO MAF dead already!!

Can't quite believe it.
Fitted a new VDO MAF to my TD5 on monday, and yesterday I noticed surging & huge clouds of black smoke:mad::mad:
Put the multimeter on the pins & 1-2 18k ohms, 1-3 no circuit, 2-3 no circuit.
Thats 5 days & less than 200km. Not Happy.

Oh well, phone up TR spares monday & hope they have another in stock

A dead MAF wouldn't cause surging and black smoke. What you are describing sounds like the classic symptoms of collapsed intercooler hoses.

Did you check the resistance on the MAF before you installed it? If not, it's entirely possible that if you are using a cheap or older multimeter that you are exceeding the resistance range and getting an error. Actually going back and reading your reports of "infinite ohms" I suspect you have actually incorrectly diagnosed a MAF failure.

Can you post up what kind of multimeter you are using?

the multimeter has a number of settings for ohms - I had it set on the one marked 2000k ohms, or 2 000 000 ohms. should be OK for a normal reading of 18k ohms.

We are talking MEGA ohms not kilo ohms. What you are trying to measure is in the range of 20-30,000,000 ohms not 18,000 ohms.

I think the only way to check the hoses is to remove and inspect. If you squeeze along the length while looking down the bores you should be able to pick up signs of damage to the internal surfaces of the hose.

If you decide to pick up a new meter, it's worth having a look at the Uni-T meters. I have a dick smith meter I bought 4-5 years ago which is a rebranded Uni-T UT60B. I think you're right - misdiagnosis on the MAF failure. I got a new multimeter that reads to 40MegaOhms, and the readings off the old MAF are pretty much OK (can't recall exactly what) but the new MAF seems to make it run better so I'll keep that one in & keep the old one for emergency use.

I'll check the turbo hoses as soon as I get a chance (probably weekend) but I've been thinking about silicone hoses for a while, so they might be the go
