How do I get my games onto my desktop setup so I don't have to keep going into W8 tiles?

This one is a pure standalone, you do have to use the "net" to download it, but it doesn't require being online to play it.

Euro Truck Simulator 2 (http://www.eurotrucksimulator2.com/index.php)

It is also highly modifiable and quite a bit of fun.

As for Win 8, I read on ZDNet news last week, the take up rate for Win 8 is even more dismal than Vista was.
I didn't think they could actually make a less popular OS, but they did it!

Thanks Shorty, I'll go and investigate the game.

As for W8, I wish I had known about it before Leeanne bought it. I would have probably bought it too, but I think I'd have tried it at the shop first, which would have afforded me proper questions etc about it all.

And I've just spent quite a portion of the afternoon trying to load a printer on,,, without much success, so no doubt I'll be looking for info about that soon :(

I think that's because Win7 hasn't been out that long, and quite a few people made the move from XP to Win7, and it's too soon to upgrade again.

I got this new computer with W8 on it because my old one won't recognise Sata drive v2 or 3. My old Sata 1 died. Is it possible to get a new sata v1 or are they a thing of the past. Give me XP OR W7 anyday

If you go to the W8 start page (with all the tiles) there are two tiles marked Microsoft Mahjong and Microsoft solitaire. These are a fair collection of stand alone games . It is also possible to download games onto your desktop page and put them into a games folder as in XP or W7. If they are not on the start page, right click and then left click on symbol bottom right of screen which says something like "show all tiles"". Look for these in the list .left click on the tile and then click on "pin to start menu"". This will place the big tile on the main page.

Why don't you purchase Win7 and bung that on instead of Win8? back up your stuff, put win7 disc in, boot off it and away you go

I have a full W7 disc and I am sorely tempted. Jim

W8 seems to be ok, it's just changed somewhat. I think the worst thing about it is, for those of us not quite so up to date with all the new fangle stuff, is the lack of written info in the packaging.
This means you need knowledge as you start it up,, which I didn't have.

spend $5 on start8, it will make you feel a bit more at home.

use chrome or opera and use xmarks to sync your bookmarks across the different browsers etc

drag the things you use all the time to the task bar

there is always buyer/user resistance to something that changes the state of play as much as windows 8 has and the usual knockers will wail as they always do even tho most have never tried it.

it is the best OS they have produced imho and once the usual resistance to something new fades away it will be seen for what it is, a nice solid os.

xp support dies in 12 months or thereabouts

that will be fun....

i find windows 8 extremely stable as long as you dont throw 3rd party tune up utilities into it

pretty much all the new big name games will require net access and that trend isnt going to go away as that is how they are currently fighting the pirates

The games bit is fairly simple,, your desktop is still there,, put your shortcut on it,,
or
after a few games W8 will put a tile on the new shiney bit for you to click on,

oh and right click a tile to unpin it;)

they even sell Mac games now,,
(can you game on a Mac?:o)

Haven't you lot worked it out yet?

Windows 8 is the game.
A game of challenge to get your head around.
All the stuff is there, you just have to find it, sometimes there are clues.
When you close 'an app', you land somewhere mysterious and have to find your way back to where you need to be.

Then there is the mastery of the elusive 'swipe' gestures and border/pad/pointer zones........

Sorry for bringing back a thread from the dead (don't check this part of the forum that often).

In most cases there is no issue with plugging a SATA v2/v3 into a SATA v1 port, the "controller" on the drive itself will just "fallback" to v1 and it just won't be as quick. In this sense, they are completely backwards compatible.

The issue you may strike is that a very large amount of the motherboards that were SATA v1 couldn't recognise drives over 1TB. So stick to 1TB or below if you can to save that issue raising it's head.

If you have been told otherwise I would seriously question where you got this advise. I have a number of SATA v3 drives sitting on SATA v2 ports and SATA v2 drives on SATA v1 ports (just the way it happened with the bazillion PC's in my place) and I have never really struck any issues.

Hope this helps you get an otherwise perfectly working PC back into action.

Hi Chris. I went back 2 steps and reinstalled the original hard drive that came with the computer. It is marked as an ATA drive and the computer boots up and runs ok. However if I connect my new drive SATA 500M onto the second sata cable the computer does not recognise that it is there. Jim

Ah OK. Hmmm, when you say it doesn't recognise it, do you mean it doesn't show up in windows or it doesn't even show up in the BIOS? If it's the former then I may be able to guide through how to sort that.

The latter though will probably mean something else completely different is wrong, most likely something wrong with your motherboard. This I probably can't help with sorry.

It seems that drives are almost plug and play and that the computer sorts them out. Other that the ata drive which works, I upgraded to a 1tb sata and this worked fine until it developed so many bad sectors that it wouldn't run. I purchased the new sata but it wont run at all. Computer cant find it

Hey Jimbo,

Sorry to beat a dead horse so to speak. Have you had a look in the BIOS when booting up your PC? When you first turn the computer on you likely get a little splash screen and down the bottom it lists a keypress to get into the "Setup," "BIOS," "System Setup," or something of the sort. This is usually "Del" but has also been "F1" "F2" "F4" "F6" "F9" "F10" and "F12". All dependent on the make of your motherboard and your BIOS.

Have a look through the menus in there, without knowing the BIOS you have I can't really be any more specific. If you have the manual for that motherboard it will be pretty helpful to you. In there somewhere you will find a list of HDD's installed. They are usually listed with the model number on them, that should help you determine if your new one is being recognised by the motherboard itself.

If it's in there, we can do some more things to troubleshoot your issue. If it isn't in there, then something isn't quite right with your motherboard and I can't really help all that much, sorry.

Chris

Just to add to this incase it's needed... Try a different sata port & cable... Might have a faulty cable or not be plugged in correctly... Does the drive spin up at all? Listen to it & see if it's actually spinning.... What about jumpers? Be careful using more than one drive & having incorrect jumper settings, that might be an issue....

Quite a bit could be at fault there... So do be sure to check those things as you said it's not showing in the bios.
