Hi guys my Td5 Xtreme has lost traction control. The TC and ABS symbols are illuminated on my dash. I've heard this to be a common problem in discos but not so much defenders.

Anyone who can help me out please do!

Cheers!

First off there are quite a few checks that you can do to see if the sensors are working or not, but this won't necessarily give you a true answer.

I suggest you simply take a pair of pliers to each sensor and gently rotate back and fourth each sensor a little whilst trying to pull the sensor out of the hub assembly and inspect for mud. Chances are there will be crud on the end o one (or more) of the sensors.

The sensors are held in by friction only so the will pull out. Careful not to damage the attached wire in the process of extraction or re-insertion. When putting ten back simply push then in until they'll go no further - initially they may bind on the relict or ring but will very quickly find there own position.

You will then need diagnostics o reset the fault code that will have been recorded.

Ps. I'm in north Sydney if you don't have any diagnostics closer.

Thanks Jon thats some great advice!

Sorry I should have mentioned I've actually taken it to a mechanic about a month a go but they just reset the fault code without checking anything. It fixed the problem for about a week.
They said if it happens again I will need to replace the whole wabco unit for $3000 or get a repair kit for $1000?

Naturally I would rather avoid that cost if i can.

Im actually working in north sydney next week so if you have a free moment your time would be greatly appreciated.

Dave,

Unfortunately next week Im going to be in the High Country.

I doubt VERY much that you'll need to spend much $. A sensor perhaps, anything else is not the norm.

If you can pull out the sensors and clean them I can reset the error codes and check the abs fault log for you the following week if that's any help.

No worries at all mate. The high country will be amazing! I'll see how I go with it and if I still need some some help I will let you know.

Have a good trip and thank you very much for your help. Much appreciated.

We had the same problem last year. We had a stick take out the brake line up on Cape York and we lost TC and ABS, and were told we had to replace the whole unit for a whopping $5500 plus $2200 to fit it

Hubby had a few words with LRA after finding out that there's a $100(approx.) part in the UK that could fix it but it's not available here.

From memory we ended up getting an internal switch for the module sent over from the UK and had it fitted, all for the grand total of...$550. Problem solved!

I'll ask the other half to post up the full details if that will help.

The lights come on indicating a fault somewhere in the system, mine came on as when they first fitted the airbags it was a pinched cable. LRA wanted $3,000 to replace the loom, it took me 5 minutes with a soldering iron and heatshrink to repair the cable......

First thing to do is find the source of the fault, as Jon said check & clean the sensors but also just check the cables to make sure they are not pinched or broken. The lights will clear as soon as the fault is resolved and the car is re-started and moves forward over 5km/h.

I too had this issue a couple of weeks ago; turned out that one sensor was not pushed in far enough. I removed them all, greased the rubber O-rings and pushed them back in - problem gone.

One more thing to consider as the same happened to me. If u have aftermarket electrical accessories (in my case, a faulty cruise control wiring loom) these can cause your problem too. Hope u get it sorted!
